There are many webmasters reporting a huge increase in the number of links reported within Google Webmaster Tools, "links to this site" report.

There are reports at WebmasterWorld and Google Webmaster Help with webmasters asking why.

Here is a screen shot of this site's links, showing a screen shot from November 2010 till now:

Google Links Increase

I rarely look at my link counts, so I am glad I captured a screen shot back in November.

Did you see a massive increase in the number of links reported by Google Webmaster Tools?

From about 22k to 45k, and also from a lot of new sites I never saw before (in GWT).

Haven't checked yet, but I'll definitely put it on my to-do list for today. I've found that Google Webmaster tools is usually the most accurate way to run a link audit, but I wonder why so many sites are seeing such a massive jump. How does Google miss 3 million links?

They have also added the ability to download ALL of your backlinks as a CSV, before it was just a selected few thousand

If you don't have webmaster tools yet, you can't

I also saw a huge increase, but most of them seem to be from very low-quality scraper-type sites, so it's odd that Google is suddenly finding/counting these things since they're trying so hard to reduce spam and low-quality search results nowadays. I don't know if I would expect this bump to last.

But their data isn't even correct.  Still.  *yawn*

From 16 million to 25 million. Yet to determine where they are added in the report, or why they weren't reported on previously

I have been noticing as well that the number of links registering in webmaster tools is starting to increase. Personally I like the types of links that are starting to show up.

This is a great update, this may effect the rankings for any sites if we see it logically.... and even this should be a part of PANDA and finally I guess this should have reflected on the rankings even, but I guess rankings didn't had any up and down.....

I thought something seemed odd. Not sure of my total link counts, but number of domains linking jumped by about 6 times what it was a day or two ago. Obviously I am not going to check them all, but many seem to be scrapers, and a lot of yellow pages style sites with various town names that probably scraped "official" yellow pages listings. Hope they count for something and not just take up space in the list.  I also noticed that Yahoo Site Explorer is not showing most of these, when usually it seems to show more than webmaster tools. Hmmm.

I've experienced a huge increase (>100%) on all my sites, and this is really good news. It's nice to finally see many of the sites that I know should be there but weren't. If only we could now have a graph of search page impressions and clicks as in Bing webmaster tools....
