Google SSL Search Not Working In Safari 5

Here is an interesting bug that I was able to replicate. Google SSL search and reportedly Google.com search yesterday, was/is not working on Apple's Safari 5 web browser.

We have some complaints about it at Google Web Search Help:

So I am running Safari 5 on my MacBook Pro and just recently when I type something into the Google search bar and hit enter, the Google search bar page reloads with no results. I type the same thing into the search bar and hit enter...and then it finds some results for me. This is quite annoying to have to type in what I am searching for twice in order to do a search. If this bug is not fixed I will be switching to another search engine. I hope that I do not have to do that.

Googler Sarah H. chimed in and said:

Thanks for reporting this bug and for providing the details.

As we look into it will you please reply back with the URL you get after the unsuccessful search but before the successful second attempt? That will be helpful because I am not able to reproduce what you're experiencing.

I was personally able to replicate the issue using Google SSL search in Safari 5. Here is a screen cast of that:

This sounds similar to what I have happening in IE 8. I have had several of my users complain about the same thing I am about to describe, too. When I open IE to my home page of Google, the drop down list no longer shows choices of searches as I type. If I hit enter to search on the word or phrase that I typed, nothing happens. I discovered this morning that if I click the "Search settings" link at the top-right corner and then click "Save Preferences" without even making any changes, the site begins working normally again. However, if I close IE and then open it to do another search, it doesn't work again and I have to go through those same steps to get anything to work. What is going on?????

Google+ is not working in Safari 5 either--just a white screen.  Works fine in Firefox

Google PLUS is not working in Safari 5 either.  Works great in Firefox, but died in Safari 5 (just  a white screen)

It stopped working on my Safari 5 also. Nothing happens when I search for anything. Works in Chrome and Firefox, though.

Stopped working for me in the last few days. Running on a Mac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and latest Safari 5.1.5

Same here - I can search with yahoo or bing but not with Google. Also, MacMail is no longer able to collect my gmail? Has something happened at the google end?
