Google News Drops Web Search Button

It seems like Google News is constantly going through tests. Besides for the ones reported yesterday with editors picks and the one from last week with sharing options, Google seems to have pulled the Google News "Search The Web" button.

Here is a picture of the Google News Search box without the "Search The Web" option:

Now it only says "Search News" and users want to also search the web.

We have tons of complaints in the Google forums. One person said:

I will have to stop using Google News as a homepage if I can't get one-click access to web search anymore. BRING IT BACK, PLEASE!

We have dozens of threads in the forums but here are just a few.

Frankly, I find this a silly controversy. People can just as easily go to the left-hand corner and press "Web". Really, do people have nothing else going on in their lives than stupid stuff like this?

Google News was my home page but NOT ANYMORE!!!! Why would they do such a stupid thing?????????

After years of having "Search the web" as an immediate option, Google now decides this wasn't any good. Go back to what worked for years and find something else to do. I also found the new web search operates somewhat erratic.

Google, I implore you, bring back the web search button on the google news page and further more give me the option to make it the default selection, first position, over the google news search button!!!! What the hell were you thinking? What possible advantage was there to dropping it?

There must not be as much going on in DS's life if there's time to comment on such silliness. Please restore the "Web Search" button back on the Google News page and leave well enough alone!!

Well there DS, where is the logic in making people have to add an extra step to do something they have been doing in one step for years? I guess Google and people like you are just trying to give us something else to do with our stupid lives. Maybe in the future, the car you buy will have the clock in the trunk. No big deal, just stop your car and open the trunk every time you want to know what time it is.

Top left of the page. There is a link called "Web" - it will do the same thing.

No, the link called "Web" does not do the same thing. It takes you to a different search page, hence the superfluous extra step that is annoying everyone here. Clicking that link will submit your search terms to their web search engine only after you have already submitted them to the news search engine. The beauty of Google News as a homepage was that it was a perfect "one stop shop" that showed you customizable news headlines and also served as a web search engine, all right there in the same place. So yes, it's incredibly lame that they changed it.

What a pain Google! Providing a link to a separate search page is NOT the same as submitting a search. Either put the web-search button back on the News page or convert the web link in left corner to a search button. Seriously, what could possibly be gained by removing such a fundamental tool?!

Why do they insist on fixing things that aren't only costs them users?

I can't figure out why it is a good idea to eliminate the web search button from Google News.  It was my home page and now I will have to look elsewhere.  Change is not always good, and in this case it is clearly a step backwards.

If Google can't decide on whether to include the button or not, why not make it a customizable option?  Personalization is so easy for Google in so many other ways but for some reason in this case they can only do it one way or another.
