Many Gmail Accounts Hacked Into - Gmail Security Breach

Aug 3, 2007 • 8:01 am | comments (8) by twitter Google+ | Filed Under Other Google Topics

There are several threads over at the Google Groups Gmail Discussion forum discussing how their accounts have been hacked into. Here is one and here is an an other thread with some of the reports.

Many people, when logging into their Gmail accounts are seeing this:

Attempted to login to my gmail account [name here] on [date here].

Username / Password do not match.

One individual documented why he thinks it happened to him in this thread.

In any event, Google has responded saying:

I'm sorry for any inconvenience that all of you may have experienced. I am very glad to hear that Hijacked has regained access to their account. For those of you that have yet to regain access to your account, we have contacted you via email to assist you further.

Please rest assured that we thoroughly investigate all reports of compromised accounts. We take account security very seriously and these types of issues receive high priority. Any kind of feedback you can provide us with is extremely valuable, so I'm forwarding everyone's feedback to the appropriate folks on the Gmail team. We work very hard to provide a great user experience on Gmail and are always working to make it better.

That's crazy! I hope I haven't been hit, I haven't received any email from Google as of yet and I seem to be able to log into all my accounts, but it's scary to know that Google don't have a handle on this and can be so easily exploited. Also, this statement "Please rest assured that we thoroughly investigate all reports of compromised accounts" tells me that this is not the first time such a thing has occured at Google.

Man, looks like Gmail isn't as secure as it seems to be. I hope Google sorts this out quick!

These groups have been deleted. I wonder if Google is trying to cover its reputation. What was at those links?

I’m at a loss..this is terribly depressing you know. I never expected my life to be so damaged so quickly. My emails have been hacked through my email and facebook account! Watch out everyone, there is a serious virus on the loose. Of course, GMail has been totally unresponsive. I am filing a police report tomorrow and calling the GOOGLE office directly. But, I am not hopeful. It is really upsetting how Gmail treats sensitive information. I understand that they may not be held responsible, but they can at least take the situation seriously. The endless circles you go through on their support site are redundant and exhausting. And the worst part is, the invitation in the beginning gives you a false sense of security and exclusivity. If Gmail is this easy to hack, they should take action and resolve the issue before peoples lives are damaged. At of this point, I’m just praying for a miracle…

Hey guys, My account has been breached as well. Someone entered my gmail and deleted many received e-mails and some sent ones. Who knows what else they messed with! I also sent some e-mails to Google, hope they will be answered. By the way, this happened right after I opened a facebook account and someone told me that it has happened quite a lot, you create a facebook account which acts like a window into your e-mail and makes it easy to hack. Watch out! regards, carmen
