Version 3 Of The Search Engine Roundtable

Feb 20, 2007 • 9:22 pm | comments (25) by twitter Google+ | Filed Under Blog Administration

We just launched a new design for the Search Engine Roundtable. All the changes are primarily design and very few functionality changes. I do hope the new design will speed up a few things including commenting on our stories and also searching our archives.

Note: Please clear your cache to see all changes.

Overall, I felt it was critical to keep the theme the same. So you can see many elements and themes from our previous design throughout the site. But now the site simply looks and fits better with our content. I am pretty tired right now, so I will sum up the major changes in bulleted list:

  • New look
  • Less ads
  • Revised authors page
  • Revised the forums page
  • Archives page jazzed up
  • Revised awards pages with added testimonials
  • Revised seals page
  • Easier to use contact forms
  • Google Coop powered internal search feature
  • Easy to understand subscribe page
  • Added recent entries page via left side bar
  • Revised advertise page
  • Easier to submit threads for consideration
  • Added custom 404 pages (forgot to mention this)
  • and more...

Our RustyBrick designer, Skew, and I worked on the site design. I then worked with Sergio to code the site, I love his work.

Please feel free to leave comments or email me via the contact us form with bugs or suggestions. Oh, yes I know the forums still needs to be converted to new design.

Update: FeedBurner is having connectivity issues. Nice to have this happen when I launch a new design. It is slowing down the site right now. I hope they fix it fast.

I see some formatting issues, we are working on it.

The older design had a more approachable color harmony - almost like saying 'Good Morning' to a friend while pouring your morning coffee The pastel yellow had a subliminal affect - that just seemed to blend in with the morning sun

looks much better, easier to read than old site. Glad that you use less ads. Never liked that stuff. I go to your site to read your content, which I happen to like very much and find educating and helped me in my own overtures very much. CSS should use a max width too otherwise the right hand column runs away on a 24" Monitor (flexible design). I Like the round corners. Header and Footer color can go across with color 100% except text. Just my 2cents, but like with any Design its a personal preference which one should respect.

SEWeb, I hope you get accustomed to it. We put a ton of effort in this. Anton, I will look into that. Need to find someone with a 24" monitor. :)

Anton, what resolution you are using to view the site? i checked it at 2048x1536 and everything looks fine i think.

Funny, i was just lamenting the old design as it was really starting to wear on me. It was so gloomy. This is a 100% improvement! Comments: stick with one major typeface. The switching between serif & sans-serif really breaks the layout up. I agree with Anton - the content in the main post area needs to be a fixed width.

I like the more subtle colors - very easy on the eyes. Nice job - I like the text spanning the full screen although I'm only at 1280 x 768.

The previous design was just fine, but this is a big improvement. Two thumbs up, Barry et al.

Have you seen your new design under IE6 in small viewport? It is strange.

Wow Barry, that's quite an update. Very web 2.0 looking. Everything is cool, very professional. I think I like the horizontal navigation more though, but that's just me. :)

I think I will create a style sheet just for those who prefer a fix width. Seems lot a large group would appreciate it.

The only thing that puzzles me is why the two "corner" images do not match the color of the blue bar (subscribe bar) that they are "flowing" with. Not real sure about the roundtable image, would probably just look better with the SEO Roundtable text logo there instead and leave the area where the text logo is right now blank with but with a more vibrant green. Also, are you aware that your two lines of copyright info are about half an inch apart in Firefox 2, IE 7 and IE 6 (res: 1024 * 768)? Let me know if you need me to send you a screenshot. As a whole the site is better than the last site and I especially like the left hand side navigation menu. Good job!

I like the new design much better. Reading articles is a bit easier on the eye, and things do appear to be loading up a small bit faster for me. I've always been a big fan of changes that are made to help improve things, yet still accomplish that task without forcing users to adapt to a completely different design -- and you've done that well here.

Nice design. However the main page posts are difficult to scan since the posts title are not in bold IMHO.

Nice looking design. More inviting :) At first glance it took me a while to figure out who posted each comment...just a thought.

I like it Rusty! very smooth!
