6 Months Later, No Google Toolbar PageRank Update...

Aug 26, 2013 • 8:55 am | comments (213) by twitter Google+ | Filed Under Google PageRank & Algorithm Updates

Google PageRankIt has now been over six months since the last widespread Google PageRank update. The last update was in early February, where users spotted changes to the Google Toolbar PageRank data.

Since then, I have not seen a major Toolbar PageRank update from Google. Which honestly, is not the norm.

Every 3-4 months or so, Google typically updates their toolbar PageRank data. Here are some of the most recent updates:

You see the pattern here, with the exception of the rate back to back PageRank update between May and August of 2012.

Now, I am all for Toolbar PageRank going away. Maybe it has?

I will email Google to see if I can get something on the record about this.

Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld.

Update: Google told me they have nothing to comment on this at the moment.

hmmm I am waiting :'( for google PR

08/26/2013 01:03 pm

I think the PR has been updated, but Google just doesn;t want to show the updates in the toolbar. IMHO.

Barry Schwartz

08/26/2013 01:04 pm

I specifically said "Toolbar."

08/26/2013 01:08 pm

Yeap. But, do you think that the "real" PR has been already updated?

Sorry, it wasn't clear for me from your post.

Google don't care about PR, they are just busy in panda & penguin Updates IMHO!

Durant Imboden

08/26/2013 02:24 pm

Maybe the fact that Google isn't bothering to update Toolbar PageRank should send a message to the people who take it seriously. (If Google doesn't think it's important, why should we?)

08/26/2013 03:37 pm

Yes it's late !! Google PR Expected Date Aug or Sep #pagerank. Last one was 4 Feb

Mark Traphagen

08/26/2013 03:47 pm

There was a gap like this before. In 2010 there was only one update, in April, and not another until January of 2011.

08/26/2013 04:10 pm

Looks like Google noticed that the pagerank toolbar is mainly a playground for spammers. Own pagerank needs to be in google webmaster tools only!!!

Dr. Pete

08/26/2013 04:18 pm

I honestly wonder why Google just keeps letting TBPR languish. Why not kill it outright and definitively say "this has no value"? I'm not sure if they just don't want the hassle, or if they like the obfuscation and panic.

08/26/2013 04:52 pm

I love how people think that just because Google isn't updating TBPR somehow means Google isn't giving it value.

08/26/2013 05:57 pm

Because there would be turmoil. So much traditional SEO theory is grounded on PageRank. It's like Facebook announcing EdgeRank was so 2 years ago. People aren't going to be happy.

08/26/2013 06:04 pm

The only people who wont be happy are the ones who sell links/advertising to the ignorant who aren't aware that toolbar page rank means basically nothing. I wish they would kill it off already, and do so in a way which makes the uselessness of TBPR clear.

08/26/2013 07:13 pm

do you people really think that something that was created by Larry Page has no value in Google algo? any proof it has no value? I think it is still important part of the algo, yes TBPR. if anyone has any proof it is not I would like to see it.

Dr. Pete

08/26/2013 07:16 pm

Again, to clarify - I'm talking only about Toolbar PR and the way Google updates and displays it. Clearly, the PageRank algorithm is still at play. It's just a question of why Google maintains the illusion of transparency by publishing a number that may have very little relation to actual PR and is usually 3-6+ months out of date.

Arslan Afzal

08/26/2013 07:16 pm

Do you people really think that something that was created by Larry Page has no value in Google algo? any proof it has no value? I think it is still important part of the algo, yes TBPR. if anyone has any proof it is not I would like to see it. Regard: www.vubex.com

08/26/2013 07:17 pm

if we talk long enough it has no value, I guess we will eventually start to believe it. However, do you have any proof it has no value except for the fact that a bunch of "experts" keep repeating it has no value.

08/26/2013 07:21 pm

but how do we know this is not actual PR? How often Google changes actual PR? Has anyone ever seen actual PR which is different from TBPR?

Mark Traphagen

08/26/2013 07:23 pm

newyorker_1 do you seriously think Google only updates its algorithm a few times a year? In testimony before the US Congress, then Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that the algorithm is updated over 500 times a year. Some of those changes are large and some small. Also many Googlers and ex-Googler have confirmed both that the actual PR is way more complicated than the toolbar number, and updated very frequently.

08/26/2013 07:30 pm

do you seriously think that with every of 500 updates a year, Google updates each parameter in the algo? If G algo has 200 values it measures, do you think it updates each one every time an update rolls? I seriously doubt it. Eg. it does not have to update domain age for every site it crawls 500 times a year. Some parameters probably need to be updated with every crawl but some probably change quarterly, yearly etc.

Durant Imboden

08/26/2013 08:25 pm

You seem to be confusing PageRank (a score calculated in real or almost real time) with Toolbar PageRank (a rounded-off display of that score that is updated no more than a few times a year). If Google eliminated Toolbar PageRank tomorrow, that wouldn't mean an end to PageRank: It would simply mean that the highly approximate visual *display* of PageRank would go away. As for whether TBPR has value, I suppose it does if you're selling links to buyers (or buying links for clients) who are foolish enough to believe that TBPR is an accurate, up-do-date indicator of PageRank.

Takeshi Young

08/26/2013 08:26 pm

People still use toolbar Pagerank to help determine the authoritativeness of a site. Google should really update it, I want to see the little green bar on all my new sites!

Dr. Pete

08/26/2013 09:28 pm

I'm very confident PR is updated regularly - maybe not quite real-time, but very, very frequently. If true PR were only updated every 6 months, Google would be a much worse search engine by all accounts. There have also been many statements to the effect that true PR is a large, continuous scale, and not 1-10, which is a logarithmic interpretation of the real scale.

PM Fiorini

08/26/2013 11:09 pm

PageRank toolbar? Really? Who cares.

08/27/2013 12:29 am

It definitely should disappear.

08/27/2013 02:43 am

I am waiting for the Google PR update from last 3 months for my newly created blog. Accordng to me Google PR is importnant atleast for the newly created blogs or websites.

08/27/2013 02:44 am

Barry is right. I built a site to get it up and running before that so called update. I linked it from my pr5 site. (With only one other link). And boom, its ranking number 4 down on the first page after about 6 weeks. from page 9. In a relatively competitive market. Still saying no page rank in the toolbar. Content is average but I thought I would tweek it later. Page rank is alive. Page rank tool bar is dead. My guess is in about a year all those little green horizontal lines we all love will disappear..What better way to get rid of paid links...and with no way to prove what rank they are.... they will all be worth, roughly ... $0.00

Rohit Palit

08/27/2013 03:44 am

Just for noobs' info, actual PR is updated real-time (as soon as Googlebot crawls pages). Toolbar PR isn't always a true reflection of the PR of a webpage.

How can you say?

Syed Waqas Bukhari

08/27/2013 07:04 am

exactly: well barry; Google typically update their toolbar pagrank within 3 plus months, but not this time (as you said that). maybe that was the part of the plan when Google's announced that no more confirmations and announcements from Google regarding any update. Or maybe it could be the reason, which you've covered most of previously updates and statements that; Google has really concerned about those links network which are involved in selling rank passing links, advertorial links, matt cutts statements and video's etc, All of that related to passing page rank... As you said here about it: http://www.digthisnews.com/google-in-action-negative-advertorials-passing-page-rank/

Well look what we have here! Blast from the Past. Google Page Rank hasn't been discussed & given consideration now a days in terms of SEO as to what I've been reading on numerous blogs. Traffic is the most important factor & the present real deal. However, it's good to read about Page Rank Update after a long time. As they knowledge is power.

08/27/2013 07:24 am

I assume PR will be update very soon... Why because they have added Page Rank word in their Link schemes (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66356?hl=en) page. Seriously, I'm also looking for PR update for my blog (http://www.fitnesswellnessblog.com/).

08/27/2013 07:55 am

Wow come on Barry... Another post about Google PR potentially being switched off when Matt Cutts has already issued comment about it countless times, saying that they won't switch toolbar PR off due to some users using it as a reference. Why would Google turn off the metric that seems to attract people to buy and sell links when they know that they can take action against those sites? Might as well give people enough rope and then let themselves make the mistake...

08/27/2013 07:56 am

How much page rank important. I have many website which have PR about 5 but they have been delisted from search engines...

08/27/2013 12:41 pm

Here's a theory - I think Google has modified their algorithm to penalize site-wide links without "rel=nofollow" and is telling all webmasters they must do all their links as "rel=nofollow"... I believe this is somehow linked to PR. I think they are trying to get Google PR back to what it originally was, ie. natural links, etc.. #justsaying #yolo

Google is doing it for killing all backlinks sellers. Matt Cutts hinted about this in one of his video

lez bennet

08/27/2013 04:48 pm

Google Page Rank is useless IMO. It was at one point when backlink juice was valuable, but Google realizes that linking and anything related to their PR is and was a bad business decision. Anyway, the value is whatever we, the internet population, give anything Google produces. We give it value, not Google. Its our mistake for believing in this ridiculous idea from the start.

lez bennet

08/27/2013 04:50 pm

I think the whole backlink selling enterprise was a way to offshore funds to countries like Pakistan and India. Its out of control. Totally abusive and I will gladly see it end.

No one can kill backlinks seller, I have seen many sellers now selling backlinks In term of domain authority , page authority , Its totally out of control thing. Even people who dont know about dofollow or nofollow backlinks are selling links on forums , I think no one can stop it !

lez bennet

08/27/2013 05:03 pm

It will stop when the system that created it stops. Google created the idea that backlinking was key to popularity and value. Google created the backlinking industry. When Google comes out with a more responsible alternative, otehr than their lame "JUST CREATE GOOD CONTENT AND LOTS OF IT", then we will start a new industry all over again. Example: IMO, if your visitors stay a long time on your site, its a good indicator its a good site. That balanced with content, no keyword stuffing and ease of use. Americans by nature like to buy things, like popularity, as in volumes of backlinks from 'friends'. Friends that they don't have, but wish they did. The idea of 'popularity' with others in America, was a fundamental ideological flaw and its no wonder the Google Backlinking Business Model has failed. Now that is something worth writing about

lez bennet

08/27/2013 05:12 pm

Show me the 'value'. Today. Not 5 years ago, but today. Show me the 'value' in Google PR to getting more value out of visitors either to or on your site. Forget about the 'perceived value' in the sale of your domain.

08/27/2013 05:34 pm

Yea yea, but you actually are who I am talking about. And by the way, I wish I had the resources that Danny Sullivan or Barry had. Hell, I would settle for Barry's Google Glass.

I actually don't wish any ill-will on you and I do agree with some of your previously stated issues with local listings for real estate. It sucks that the updates to the SERPs hurt your business, but you act like an ass. Not to mention your CNN posts border on disgusting when you are referring to anyone you seem to consider as 'the other'. I want you to know that the only reason I don't attach some of your postings to your actual name is because a) that's a horrible thing to do to somebody; and b) I truly do feel bad for you and about your situation.

I have nothing against snowbirds. My grandparents could be called snowbirds; I see the appeal of the move, it just isn't something I am interested in (I am all for the cold weather and mountains...not a beach person I guess). I think 'snowbird' is the way most people refer to those from the North East who make the move down South for the winters as they get up in age.

Wait, what? I am impersonating a domain in Vietnam? Am I just dense and am missing the slight here? I really don't know what you are trying to say in your edit of this post. Fake adoration of Google? Not really. There is a real annoyance for the headless chicken crowd who process things in a way which has all the fault with Google and none in their own court, though. A refusal to even try to understand what is being said (obviously stated or through corporate PR speak) in favor of spouting off the same nonsense over and over again is frustrating to watch. But seriously, what are you getting at with the Vietnam thing...? I would like to visit Vietnam one day...

LOL... Spam city! For the folks in Rochester, DO NOT signup for an SEO package with this guy.

08/29/2013 08:37 am

Here's an idea.... Refresh it more regularly! Link sellers typically sell monthly packages so push data out once a month. That way, PR never stays the same...it could be PR3 one month, PR2 the next, PR5 the one after and so on. This way, SEO's, link builders, content marketers or whatever would also have a better idea of what Google thinks of links etc and adjust LB strategies accordingly. If PR goes down one month, LB'r makes sure they build better quality links next month... which would essentially help to eradicate spam, wouldn't it?

I agree but there is not validation with PR as compared to earlier. For eg. earlier you can validate that a high PA/DA or Majestic CF/TF is not penalised by looking at google PR. But now there is no way to validate that. Also, right now buying High PR links is also risky as for last 8 months there is no update and the link may be junk. www.avainfotechseo.com

There was a gap of nine months between PageRank updates as recently as 2010. It has therefore been suggested that the next PageRank update will be early in November 2013: The possible reasoning for the delay was also provided. (http://keywordseopro.com/blog/).

Google is obviously working on something more important than PR updates. I have relatively recently created a new professional website and I keep noticing up's and down's in the Google results, even without renewing my first page for a few weeks. It seems that Google is experimenting on a new algorithm, which will be known after God knows when. Which I think is fair of course, because, according to my own experience, many websites similar to mine which provide outdated information and have never been renewed since years, always come first. Let's see what changes will be made. http://peptiko.gr

Getting me worried now. It's been almost 5 months since I launched my site http://www.blueplanetjournal.com and PR is still N/A. After spending days and nights for months figuring out right way to do things it's becoming a little discouraging to pour more effort until it becomes clear what's going on. Hope it happens soon so people like me know exactly where they are and how much more effort needs to be put in...

09/06/2013 05:50 am

Even if the Pagerank wasn't updated in a while the google-algo takes every activity into consideration. That means, your content, your social likes, backlinks, etc. are directly influencing trust flow & citiation flow. There have been always hot discussions in regards to the pagerank update. But I would never worry about it. It's like it was in school. Classmates were getting so nervous before they got back a test. But it was useless, since the test was already written. Same things is happening with the pagerank. If you do your homework, you'll do fine. I was also publishing an article about the pagerank since many people say that the pagerank itself doesn't count anymore. Well.. this is not true in my opinion. So feel free to check out my little article: http://www.rieder-enterprises.com/pagerank-verbessern/ The article is in german only - but the google translator tool will do a great job. However, I think the pagerank is underestimated and these days a stronger indicator than ever. I would almost say, a very powerful strategic weapon. also on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_8ahbMcT-I well then, happy blogging to all of you !

09/07/2013 12:07 am

Google doesn't give a damn whether small businesses can compete or not. Also it's quite natural that a few will make all the money and the rest won't even be able to compete. It is a self-reinforcing cycle because, with more money, businesses can improve their services and/or charge less, which will probably mean more money coming in and a bigger market share. They can also expand to other industries and make the wheels spin even faster.

What does 2010 have to do with 2013 updates? That article keeps saying 2010, when its 3 years later. That makes no sense. Even if they are doing the same thing as they did in 2010. I don't see why wait so long to do it again, then change back to every 3 to 4 months. If I don't see improvement or earn anything to pay for the hosting by the time I need to pay for my domain, then site is going offline, and will be no more due to google crap of taking their own sweet time.

I think Google's priorities are screwed up. They're more concerned about killing an industry than doing what is right for the Internet. Folks, this is what happens when a company goes public and all they try to do is make their investors happy.

09/11/2013 03:01 am

Maybe the Google folks were too busy shutting down Google Reader and IGoogle and auctioning off the office furniture from those departments to update toolbar pagerank? Or working on shutting down Google Toolbar Pagerank?

09/11/2013 03:03 am

They can drop it if it does not fit in their business model - ie: Google Reader etc

09/11/2013 07:43 am

Unless a site has google analytics installed or the user uses somekind of a client/toolbar/addon by google, then google has no way of knowing how long someone has been in a site....

Shell Harris

09/11/2013 02:41 pm

I would love to see PageRank go away. It is such a poor determiner of site or page strength and trust. But, Google needs to turn if off completely so no sites have PR value and then other methods, more useful methods, can be used to calculate a sites authority.

09/16/2013 06:28 am

I've been wondering for a while about what has been going on with the page rank. Like a lot of other people within this comment section, I've been doing crazy amounts of work on a site that I had created about 11 months ago but didn't really start getting involved with adding content until after the last update. Hoping things will pick up and they'll put this all together more regularly in the future. My site is www.pennystockdream.com

Everyone is saying Google PR is not worth it, but what other sources are taking its place while they don't update? Exactly, none. So the people that say don't worry about, then bring something forward to take its place or just don't say anything since you got nothing good to say about Google PR. I am going to have to take my site down to lack of visitors by the time I have to actually pay for my hosting after my free year trial I got. Bogus BS is what it is. Fully optimized ready running site that will not go any where due to lack of Googles updating. If Google is not the right tool nothing is taking over to help keep things going normally for new sites after February update. The Internet is full of opinions but when the next update comes Pagerank. So far, they all were wrong with their predictions. Meanwhile, we read more and more that will probably Pagerank'll abolished. I can not imagine now ... but the fact is but the PR is not everything. But how many pages have a good PR no visitors? A good ranking with real visitor numbers certainly more "value" than just a good PR. Maybe the update before Christmas comes anyway * smile * who knows ....http://terra-blog.de

No one is talking about how Google just announced that they were revamping their PR algorithm in honor of their Sept 26 birthday? My philosophy forum http://worldthought.com was lucky enough to get PR 3 last February while it was still new with hardly any traffic, so all you new sites have good reason to hang in there. I think content right now is more important than ever: this long PR delay was an obvious tactic to kill SEO firms so that Google would inherit SEO-oriented budgets instead. They suffocated these firms by preventing their clients from seeing any returns in PR. The best way to keep them dead is by actually enforcing quality, original content as the dominant PR factor. This makes me happy because I don't want to have to compete with people spending millions on SEO firms!

IE 10 created an add-on free environment? What kind of backward thinking is that?? I like that way Matt tried to stay professional there but @1:10 practically choked himself trying not to laugh at IE's expense. Matt also knows that the marketshare of IE is rapidly decreasing, which is why he was a little less subtle in his humor what he said "If IE becomes more popular in the future". I think we can safely say that IE will not be recovering and that PR will be just fine... He also brings up the excellent point that end-users without any concern about SEO use PR as a way to gauge whether a source is credible, which is as good of a reason as any to keep PR alive.

@priyank, Congratulations on having the sketchiest site I've ever seen on the internet. YOUR SITE is an example of exactly why they are taking so long with the PR update. A site about clicking on ads to generate money? That's click fraud. Dishonest sites like that are made every day (although not quite that dishonest), which is why Google is leaving everyone out to dry: no one gets any immediate rewards just to keep spammy sites like yours from rising through the SERPs quickly. I personally feel much better about suffering through the slow PR gains knowing that the generation of shady sites is also being discouraged. PS. enjoy being blacklisted by Google for running a click farm—if it doesn't get raided by interpol first.

I tried two sites, one last year for whole year and it got no PR at all for the whole year, and I just started a new site http://www.awesomebryner.com, and it is just over 2 months old. It is being like the other one last year with nothing happening. I setup up great too. So too me with even hours or days or weeks of trying things and researching to make it better, and nothing has helped. It is almost pointless. I am starting to think website are just money hungry ways for a hobby or business. You waste a lot of time to get some where and time I mean very long time. It is like being stuck in a desert with no water.
