Is Search Engine Optimization a Bad Investment?

Julie Joyce writes on the SEO Chicks blog talks about the American Express believes that SEO is a waste of money. The idea is that there are snake oil salesmen (not all SEOs do this, though), but it ends up affecting the industry as a whole. Just because someone promised "guaranteed top 10 rankings in 90 days" doesn't mean he's doing it right or ethically. The industry shouldn't take a hit for that, but unfortunately, they do.

Julie says that you shouldn't give out bad advice as it's extremely irresponsible.

Yes, there are examples of poor SEO but that’s absolutely no reason to advise all small business owners against employing the services of reputable people who happen to have the background and the knowledge to compete in the online arena.

And she ends the article with a bang: that bad advice isn't much better than bad SEO. So there, AMEX.

AMEX needs to have a realistic expectation of SEO, and possibly revamp their style. Amex is perceived as a stuffy corporate monolith, Mastercard is priceless.

I find it much more useful to show clients why their sites are under-performing from an SEO standpoint as opposed to guaranteeing top 10 results. It best to differentiate yourself from your competitors and focus on quality content. Unless you're selling widgets that are identical to widgets sold by countless others, content is king.

Hello Mark Felix here, I think that now that the internet has become in some cases the dominant revenue generator for most companies, these companies should start looking at home grown webmaster/seo employees, learning seo is second nature with so much free information on the net and as we all know the easiest way to rank is getting good back links assuming all the basic elements are in place.

Search Engine Optimization is a good start for small business to be successful but they need to find right SEO that will give them the good result that they needed.

Agreed that showing clients why their sites are underperforming from a SEO perspective is a more realistic approach than guaranteeing front page placement within 90 days. It is very risky offering guarantees of that sort, however if one identifies the shortcomings, offers solutions, hopefully get to implement them....and then show real improvement the fight is half won.

Every field of business related to technology and computer needs Search Engine Optimization.. that's why many large companies are eager to get the service of SEO company.. the important aspect to remember is to get a professional honest company.. SEO company must give their clients a realistic predictions on what will be the result for their ranking.. My advice for SEO companies is to give quality services..
