Google GlassA symbolic change happened the day I picked up Google Glass, Google changed the name of their Google+ account for Glass from +Project Glass to +Google Glass.

Why? Google said because they are beyond the "project" stage and explorers, like myself, already have Google Glass in their hands - building out software for it, using it in the real world. Google said this is going to hit consumers in the next year or so. So this is no longer just an experiment but a real deal.

Google said:

Just a heads up that we’ve changed our page name to +Google Glass since that’s what most of you are calling us nowadays. When we created this page more than a year ago, we chose “Project” to recognize that we were all exploring something new. Back then, the Glass Explorer Edition was still just a hope and a dream. Now we have Explorers with their very own Glass dreaming and exploring with us. While we're still many months away from a wider consumer launch, we’re updating our page name to reflect where we are today.

Project Glass

Google Glass

There is a huge debate if Google Glass and the concept behind it will go mainstream. I have been wearing it since Friday afternoon and it is pretty amazing. If it was more integrated with Google Apps and my real phone, it would be even more amazing. I am just scratching the surface right now but I believe this concept will be the future.

People in my neighborhood are clueless as to what this is. In fact ,in a room of about 15 people, no one had heard of Glass. They thought I was some weirdo - which may be true. Some guy this morning told me, you know, you can stick lenses in there so it doesn't look so weird. I said, I don't care, in a couple years, no one will think this is weird.

I'm not sure that in a couple of years it won't seem to be weird but also rude, invasive and with a Segway-like aura of elitism.

Why is it elitism?

Perception, I mean. Segway was pitched as the future of mass transportation but (possibly thanks to Gob Bluth?) that isn't the impression they convey when you see someone using one.

The Segway was incredibly expensive. Google will have to come down on price on this.

This will be like people talking on bluetooth in public. It's still weird.

Segway is for losers.

You do like mentioning that you got such a thing, don't you Barry?! Not the first time...

I know, I feel the more I mention it, the funnier it gets. But maybe I have a weird sense of humor?
