Today is Harry Houdini, the legendary magician and escape artist's, 137th birthday. He was born on March 24, 1874 and died on October 31, 1926 at the aged 52. He was born Budapest, Austria-Hungary with the given name of Erik Weisz and died in Detroit, Michigan.
Google decided to remember this legend with a special Google Doodle on most, if not, all Google home pages today. The logo is copied above and it shows off a representation of Houdini being handcuffed before he escapes.
He made his fame in America for his magical acts, most notably the art of escaping impossible situations. But like many successful Americans, he then joined the movie business and starred, directed and produced films.
Some of his notable escape acts include:
- Mirror handcuff challenge
- Milk Can Escape
- Chinese Water Torture Cell
- Suspended straitjacket escape
- Overboard box escape
- Buried Alive stunt

I think Google Panda is the new Harry Houdini for the moment. Latest update made a lot of sites move from 1st or 2nd position to nowhere from one day to another :) and nobody can say why. I think THAT'S REAL MAGIC

Once again, 137 years, no significance. Harry Houdini? Still nothing for Ronald Reagan, the best president this country has ever seen. But the extreme left wil never concur nor be responsible for condoning anything the right has ever done.

Yes, I like it. However, I think there are a lot of people and historical events that are more deserving and which are ignored by Google.

I take it you are a Republican? Have you ever heard of Abraham Lincoln? Newsweek recently published an article entitled "How Dumb Are We?". I suggest you read it.

The logo isn't bad but the grammar and general misuse of wording isn't great.

Best President? the US had 1 trillion in debt when he started, he'd triple that by the time he left office. Let's not forget that he valued education so much he introduced taxing on financial aid for higher education, or that he classified ketchup as a vegetable so he could decrease funding on school lunches.

Harry Houdini is a legend and someone who all young magicians can look up to as the pinnacle of their profession. Quit hating until you get your own multi-billion dollar corporation and can put the logo of somebody up on their whatever birthday.

I just logged on and immediately noticed that the logo and pic was all about Harry Houdini. Although I never met him, my grandfather worked as a stagehand for him during Vaudeville and my grandmother assisted on stage. From my perspective his work in magic and illusions brought attention to and interest in "other wordly" possibilities. Thank you, this was a nice change from the problems in our global society.

Oh doesn't this bring out the self-righteous and the idiots. It's something different and fun. There's still plenty of time to delve into the "serious" topics and all that crap. Just chill, as we used to say. Hip hip hooray for Houdini AND the logo!

Maybe it will be inspiration to work their way out of this horrible PR nightmare called Panda. Many webmasters are starting to call them out on even crappier results than Pre-Panda. All it takes is a little NY Times article to get things done over there. What if the times started listening to these result. Usually I might see Bing's results compared to Google by webmasters once a week. Usually they say google comes out on top. Post-Panda, I'm seeing 2-3 articles posted a day and the results are now leaning towards Bing. Is Google the next Alta Vista?
