Google: Will Pipes In URLs Work?

Yesterday, I wrote that Google was cool with pipes in title tags. But I did mention that back in 2010, Google said don't use pipes in URLs.

So I asked Gary Illyes if that is still true, should you not use pipes in URLs these days. Gary Illyes from Google said on Twitter, "I don't know for sure about that, but the general rule is that if it works for browsers, works for us."

I am experimenting by using a pipe in the URL of this blog post, let's see what happens. I am using google-pipes|in-urls as the URL. If it works, we will see. Update, my CMS won't let me us pipes, so my experiment failed. :(

As noted by Michael Martinez in the comments on yesterday's story, the [inurl:|] doesn't return anything:

google pipe in url

But so does the intitle:

google pipe in title

So not sure what to make of that.

Let's see what happens with this story. Update, my CMS won't let me us pipes, so my experiment failed. :(
