SEOmoz put together a nice living document on Google's history of updates, algorithm changes and major user interface changes.

Personally, I find it very useful to see what Google has done in the past because it might help people understand where they are going in the future. In fact, I put together a huge presentation on the history of Google's updates, mostly pulled from WebmasterWorld and my Google Updates category for that presentation.

In any event, here is the SEOmoz list followed by my more concise list:

If this works like psychology then yes it is very useful :) Looking into the past in order to understand and co-create a better present/future. It's great that you keep such a concise list.

Thanks again Barry for a great post, The Google update history is good for trival pursuits and perhaps to help some figure out what happened to site traffic back then... To add to the purpose on each of these milestones perhaps some short comments next to each milestone might offer more... as they say the devil is in the detail. Cheers

I think Google update History is more for fun and trivia, but you could always use it to track your new clients old data (for example). By the way - one great interactive timeline of the updates could be found here: http://fortseo.com/google-updates-timeline Enjoy :)
