Yahoo Search Marketing & Publisher Network Undergo Maintenance?

I've spotted a few posts in the forums complaining about how Yahoo is reporting very few clicks and impressions on both the Yahoo Search Marketing side and Yahoo Publisher Network side. The simple answer is that this may not a bug, but rather a reporting delay due to a maintenance update.

Yes, there is a lot of confusion about this update, since there was no mention of it on either the official YPN Blog or the YSM Blog, but there is a notification that an update is coming this coming weekend (not the past weekend). So there are rumors that Yahoo put the wrong date on the notification.

If you login to the YPN console, you will see a notification placed on the 21st that warns of an maintenance period on the 28th. Here is the message:

Notification of Scheduled Maintenance - Beginning 8/28/09

On Friday August 28, 2009 there will be a temporary interruption in the ability to access the Yahoo! Publisher Network portal. This comes as a part of planned system maintenance, and will take place on Friday Aug. 28, 2009 from 6:00 pm PDT to Saturday Aug. 29, 2009 2:00 am PDT. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience.

Again, there are rumors that the maintenance is going on now, which is why there is a reporting lag on both the YPN and YSM side.

Yahoo Slow On Sending 1099s to Publishers?

By now, most Google AdSense publishers should have received their tax form, the 1099, from Google. But if you are a Yahoo Publisher Network publisher, you may not have received it yet. A DigitalPoint Forums thread has some publishers complaining that they have not yet received their 1099.

A 1099 is a tax form that needs to be provided by Yahoo to some of their US publishers. I am pretty sure, I personally did not received a 1099 this year, but I can be the exception. I did not hear of any publishers receiving their 1099s yet.

It may be that some got lost or Yahoo has yet to send them out yet. They still have time and I know I am still receiving tax forms from banks and financial institutions to this date.

Did you get your 1099 from Yahoo?

The End of Yahoo Publisher Network Nearing?

I am honestly surprised I have not seen more discussion around this topic in the forums recently. A couple days ago, I reported at Search Engine Land that Yahoo is shutting down Content Match in the UK, Germany and other locations outside of the US. The last day for advertisers outside of the US to bid on Content Match ads would be March 31st. That directly translates to less inventory for Yahoo to place in their Yahoo Publisher Network. Yes, the Google AdSense competitor.

Yahoo sent an email to their advertisers, saying:

As a valued client we are writing to give you advance notice of the closure of our Content Match product in Europe.

The decision to close Content Match underlines our commitment to focus on our Sponsored Search and Display business and to simplify our solutions to deliver a high ROI for our advertisers.

Content Match will close on 31 March 2009, after which the product will no longer be supported. All Advertisers should therefore opt out of the Content Match marketplace by this date. Your account manager will be happy to assist you.

So, Yahoo has decided to commit their focus to "sponsored search" and the "display business" and then do away with their contextual ads? Really? Is this just an international commitment or is it a company wide change?

Is Google going to be competitor free in the contextual space? I know, there are many small contextual ad networks, but the only ones that can really compete would be Yahoo and Microsoft. Microsoft's ContentAds are still in limited beta and currently have a long way to get up to par against Google. Many were not happy with Yahoo, but it was a great alternative.

Are these the signs of the end to Yahoo's Publisher Network?

Forum discussion at DigitalPoint Forums.

Update: Yahoo emailed me to say that Content Match is only closing in Europe.

Google & Yahoo Pay Publishers Early for Holiday Season

Both Google AdSense and Yahoo Publisher Network publishers are reporting getting payment early this month. Some suspect it is due to being closed during the normal pay period, due to the holidays. Some suspect Google and Yahoo are being nice for the holiday season. Some suspect it might have to do with making sure payment goes out before the end of their fiscal years (due they even go by the calendar year?).

We have a Google AdSense related thread at WebmasterWorld where many have reported already receiving the money in their bank accounts. We also have a Yahoo Publisher Network related thread at DigitalPoint Forums.

For whatever reason the payments are going out now, many publishers are finding it to be a nice holiday gift.

YPN (Yahoo Publisher Network), Where Did You Go?

Remember Yahoo's Google AdSense killer? Yea, the Yahoo Publisher Network, or commonly known as YPN. Haven't heard about that service in a long time? That is correct.

The last time we posted anything about it was on October 13th and it was titled Yahoo Improves Publisher Network Relevancy. It was basically a Yahoo rep going around to the various forums announcing that Yahoo has improved the relevancy of the product.

Since then, not one peep from us on Yahoo's Publisher Network. Why? Well, as you know, we cover forum buzz and since the forums are hush on the topic, we remain hush.

The last post at WebmasterWorld's YPN Forum was on October 24th. Someone just created a thread today at WebmasterWorld asking if YPN is dead. His reasoning?

This board doesn't seem to be getting any activity these days. Is YPN dead for publishers around here?

No one will argue, or no one has argued - at least yet.

Sad to see no news, at all, on YPN for this long - but I guess this is the new reality of Yahoo?

Yahoo Improves Publisher Network Relevancy

Yahoo has said they have improved the relevancy of their ads in the content network, or as you know it - the Yahoo Publisher Network.

Yahoo's official forum representative, YahooPete, posted threads at WebmasterWorld, DigitalPoint Forums and Search Engine Watch Forums with the details.

In short, not only does Yahoo look at the content on the page, but also tailors the ad to the specific user viewing the page. I'll quote Yahoo on this:

The new technology not only attempts to understand what the content is on a page, but also, who is viewing it, which helps you get your ad in front of the right customer. Content Match now combines a better understanding of web page and ad content with insights from users’ geographic and behavioral profiles.

This leads to a higher click through rate and hopefully more conversions for advertisers participating in the content network.

Yahoo ends off with this reminder, when using content match:

  • Create Content Match-only campaigns to manage bids and budgets separately from Sponsored Search.
  • See how much you can afford. If you add a Content Match campaign, you may need to adjust your spending limits accordingly.
  • Write specific ads and have targeted keywords for your Content Match ads, so that the ads appear only in the type of content where you want them.

Did Yahoo Fix the Publisher Reports?

For the past few days, we have been covering reporting issues with Yahoo Publisher Network, which showed publishers earnings were about half of what they should be. Yesterday, I reported that Yahoo confirmed the issue as an error and said they fixed it. But did they really?

Three publishers posted after YahooPete's post, where Yahoo said it was fixed. These publishers are not convinced. Here are two posts from publishers:

It shows my pending balance as much larger than my daily reports total for July. Quite possibly the daily reductions are still appearing in the "pending balance" but deducted from the reporting.
Same here. Pending balance is larger than total of daily reports. Must be total of the numbers I see in the evenings vs. the total of the numbers I see in the morning for the previous day.

YahooPete, this isn't just a glitch from the 24th. It was happening before then and it's been happening since then, too.

Maybe it just needs more time or maybe there is a larger issue at hand?

Yahoo Publisher Network Payout Decrease an Error

Earlier this week I reported that Yahoo publishers noticed a major pay decrease from within the Yahoo Publisher Network. I asked then, "Do you think Yahoo is skimming their publishers or do you think it is a temporary reporting glitch?"

Well, it turns out to be a reporting glitch.

An official Yahoo representative, YahooPete, replied to the WebmasterWorld thread saying:

This was the result of a technical issue that affected Content Match Thursday afternoon. The issue has been resolved.

So your revenue numbers should now be reporting properly.

Yahoo Publishers Recently Notice Huge Drop in Earnings; Is Yahoo Skimming?

A WebmasterWorld thread has several reports from publishers of the Yahoo Publisher Network complaining that their income is down over 50%.

The publishers suspect fraud! They suspect that Yahoo is not reporting the true impression and clicks, thus skimming earnings off the top. Here are some of the accusations:

Last night I took a look before heading off to bed and this morning noticed it reported yesterdays commission as 1/2 of what it was reporting.
Yahoo is definitely not counting everything properly. Our stats have been very reliable for over 2 years, and we are receiving the same amount of traffic.
I agree, they count it properly during the day, then the next day the revenue gets reduced...not just a little, but 50%? I'll keep a look out as well.
Good to know I am not alone. The numbers being reported in the morning are not the same as the night before; they are less. YPN is on only one site anymore but it's probably time to take them off of it.

Alright, I can't quote all the complaints, because they go on and on. Do you think Yahoo is skimming their publishers or do you think it is a temporary reporting glitch?

YahooSarah Goes MIA - Blame Yahoo Publisher Network?

Yahoo has been having a rough time over the course of the past several months. But that doesn't mean the company stops working and competing, at least that is what you would think.

YahooSarah, the official Yahoo representative at WebmasterWorld, has not posted a response at WebmasterWorld in exactly a year from today. YahooSarah's last post was in a thread named Publisher broken? on July 16, 2007 at 3:50 pm (EST). She said:

I wanted to chime in briefly to let you know that we are aware of the problems you are experiencing and are working to resolve as soon as possible. Apologies for the inconvenience.

I'll post again when I can confirm that we have resolution.

But not post came after that. Yes, YPN was fixed, but no confirmation from Yahoo was received - even a year later.

Yes, we still have YahooPete posting in the forums. His last post was about three weeks ago. But YahooPete is responsible for Yahoo Search Marketing topics, while YahooSarah is responsible for Yahoo Publisher Network (YPN) topics. Maybe YPN is dead and there is no need for YahooSarah's posts?

Almost Three Years Later, Yahoo Publisher Network Still Failing To Compete Globally

Yahoo's contextual product, Yahoo Publisher Network, Yahoo's Google AdSense product, almost three years later is still failing to compete with Google globally. The Yahoo Publisher Network launched on August 3, 2005, back then as a beta, exclusive to US based publishers only. Still, almost three years later, Yahoo refuses to take YPN globally.

Why am I writing about this now? Well, I guess the three threads per day on "When is YPN coming to [location]? finally got to me. I have asked Yahoo in the past when it would be expanding this product. They never really gave me an answer. I assume it has to do with not wanting to deal with certain issues when it comes to handling publisher details outside the US. Of course, there are some exceptions to the rule but on a whole, they have no expanded the product outside of the US.

Will they ever? I would think so - but right now, doesn't seem like something on the schedule. Will forum members ever stop asking? After three years, the threads keep coming - so I doubt it.

We should really get some type of statement from Yahoo on this. Does Yahoo have plans to launch YPN globally? If so, approximately when? Will the roll out be in specific markets, like you did with the new Panama launch?

Click Fraud Rate Decreases Across Yahoo and Google, Says Click Forensics

In the first quarter of 2008, Click Forensics announced that click fraud has decreased across Google and Yahoo to 27.8% (from 28.3% in Q4 2007).

Is that a number to be worried about? As Barry says on Search Engine Land, these numbers may not account for discounted questionable clicks. Google has said before that click fraud only accounts for 0.02% of clicks.

Meanwhile, forum members believe that the report by Click Forensics may be misleading. After all, they are a traffic quality management firm and as such "has an interest in reporting exagerrated click fraud rates," according to martinibuster. He says that if the numbers were in actuality this high, "I am certain we'd hear about it in the AdWords forum." After all, that translates to millions of dollars lost.

Yahoo Forgets to Renew Security Certificate for Publisher Network

When Yahoo Publisher Network publishers try going to the YPN Portal, they are now presented with a security prompt. If you look closely at that error, it says that their secure certificate has expired.

Yahoo Publisher Network Security Cert

It expired a day ago. I guess Yahoo is trying to cut costs wherever they can, including security. Of course I am kidding. Often companies forget to renew their security certificates. I am sure it will be resolved shortly and I am sure the site is still secure, it just doesn't have the Equifax seal of approval.

Make Money From Your PDFs: Yahoo Teams up with Adobe

Adobe has announced Ads for PDF, a system they launched with Yahoo which will allow PDF owners to monetize for their content much like Google AdSense. The CNet News blog goes into detail on the partnership, explaining that it's a PPC program for contextually relevant ads that are displayed to the right of the PDF article. The ads look like Yahoo Publisher Network ads.

Currently, the program is in beta and only a few publishers have been invited, but it looks rather cool and Adobe is taking applications for additional beta testers. This is definitely a good move on Yahoo's part.

Yahoo! Acquires BlueLithium, a Behavioral Ad Firm

Yesterday, Yahoo announced that it had purchased BlueLithium, a behavioral-targeting ad network, for $300 million.

What is BlueLithium, you ask?

BlueLithium is a three-year-old company whose technology tracks consumer behavior as users move from site to site, allowing businesses to deliver more relevant ads. A consumer shopping for environmentally friendly products might see ads for hybrid cars a week later.

At WebmasterWorld, forum members discuss the acquisition and see that Yahoo is moving ahead of Google in the area of behavioral ad-targeting. In fact, Google is not enthusiastic about the idea at all.

Some thoughts as presented by forum members say that YPN will improve with this acquisition:

This is something that could help Yahoo in many ways. Not only will it help them better target their existing ads, but will help bring the ads worldwide and give them another dimension to both YPN and its advertising program.

Others feel that Yahoo! will come out with a much better analytics package:

It also sounds like Yahoo is interested in providing advertisers with the analytics side of the equation above and beyond simple conversion tracking (maybe kind of like Google Analytics on steroids?)

All in all, forum members agree that this is a great move for Yahoo and are excited to see how it will benefit the company. Congratulations, Yahoo, on the acquisition.

Yahoo Publisher Network Issues Resolved?

It appears that reports from the WebmasterWorld thread are showing the Yahoo Publisher Network outage we have reported twice is now resolved.

There has not been official confirmation from a Yahoo representative, yet. But posts in the thread suggest it has been fixed.

Payment per click is about back where it was and targeting seems a little better. Keep it up, YPN....
Yahoo fixed the problem. The targeting is MUCH better.

Yahoo Publisher Network Continues Working On Outage, Frustration Mounts

First, we reported on July 16th that the Yahoo Publisher Network was running slower than usual. The next day, we reported that Yahoo will fix the outage by next week. Now, DigitalPoint Forum members are wondering if they will get the lost revenue due to the outage.

Apparently, the answer is no.

I spoke with a manager at YPN who said they will not be making payments up to the YPN publishers as 'they lost revenue as well'. One begins to wonder if Yahoo gets it...?

The disappointment is obvious. Members think that Yahoo just doesn't get it despite their own losses.

Of course they lost revenue themselves, but they don't care about the publisher enough to accept responsibility and admit they were in the wrong.

Yahoo! to Fix Network Outage by Next Week

Yesterday, we reported that Yahoo! Publisher Network Suffers Major Ad Serving Slow Down. This has not only caused sites to load slowly due to the ads lagging some page loads, but it has also caused publisher's earnings to drop over the past few days.

Yahoo! has posted a message in the Yahoo! Publisher Network console, saying:

Network Update
You may have noticed a decrease in impressions in your Yahoo! Publisher Network account recently. This is due to a partial outage that occurred during routine maintenance. We are actively addressing the issue and expect improvements by next week. Thanks for your patience.

So by "next week" we can expect improvements, but what about this week?

YahooSarah has also come in to a WebmasterWorld thread saying:

Yahoo! Publisher Network Suffers Major Ad Serving Slow Down

Dozens of reports have come from both DigitalPoint Forums and WebmasterWorld that Yahoo's contextual ad network, the Yahoo! Publisher Network, was running extremely slowing this weekend.

Reportedly, the ads displayed on publisher sites were loading extremely slowly or not loading at all. Here are select quotes from the threads.

My ads have been so poorly served today, about half the time they don't show up at all and the other half only 1 or 2 ads will show up when normally 4 would.
We're removing YPN and replacing it with AdSense now to salvage some revenue until (if/when?) YPN get its act together. A note in our account letting us know what is going on would be nice. Are listening, YPN?

First reports started coming in on Saturday at 8:45 in the morning (EST). It seems like the issues with the ads began to resolve themselves the day after at around 9pm (EST). This is based on the reports at the forums. I do not have official confirmation from Yahoo on this reported outage.

Yahoo Publisher Network Publishers Receive Payments Via PayPal

Last month, Yahoo added PayPal as a payment option for the Yahoo Publisher Network publishers.

A DigitalPoint Forums thread reports publishers now received the money they earned with Yahoo in their PayPal accounts. The payments were first noticed yesterday, so if you are a publisher and selected the PayPal option, check to see if you received your money.

One member was surprised to see that PayPal did not take a percentage of the payment, like they normally do.

Awesome, just got my payment from paypal! Better yet, paypal didn't take anything out of it! It was the full amount! Very cool! I like the paypal payment now! Very very cool!

The YPN payment page clearly says, "you will not be charged a transaction fee for money deposited to your PayPal account from the Yahoo! Publisher Network program."

Publishers Switching Back to Yahoo! Publisher Network

We reported back in April that Yahoo publishers were leaving Yahoo for Google AdSense. Ever since Google took a stance on MFA sites, it seems like many publishers are giving Yahoo another shot, with their Yahoo! Publisher Network product.

A DigitalPoint Forums thread has several publishers taking another look at Yahoo! They are finding that the relevancy of the ads are strong and now consistent and the earnings are getting better every day, relative to Google AdSense.

Yesterday, I could not believe it. On one page that I put YPN back on, they were able to serve THREE TARGETED ADS INSTANTLY, no refresh required. I refreshed a few times, and they STUCK (unlike a few months ago)! I tried another page - SAME THING! Another, SAME THING! So I kept going.

Let me try a sample live YPN ad right below this line, just to see:

Don't get me wrong, Yahoo just recently released their own form of smart pricing for their contextual product, they call it a new quality pricing model - where they received some criticism over but mostly praise from their advertisers.

Yahoo! Service Engineer Blasts Yahoo! Publisher Network

This post is a mistake - please ignore. I do sincerely apologize.

Randi Harper, a Service Engineer who has been working at Yahoo! since November 2006 (see linkedin profile) has some harsh words for Yahoo's contextual advertising product.

In a blog post on Randi's personal blog, she wrote:

So yeah, I sold my soul once again and added Google Adsense. Don't give me shit. I know I work at Yahoo! - but I don't even know if they offer a service like adsense. Screw it.

This morning, everything looked fine. Ads were for dedicated servers, BSD blogs - I'm cool with all that. That's the type of ad my readers would be interested in.

I just now looked at the ads - and this is a bunch of crap. Ann Coulter is a raging lunatic with a ferret stuck up her ass. Why the hell is my ad bar being pro-democrat and pro-Ann Coulter? I hate both. I'm like, a libertarian or something. If I cared, that is. And I don't. I live in California. We have the goddamn Terminator.

What on earth is going on with these ads? And why has my number of daily visitors increased about 200% to 1,800 - 2000 visitors a day? It doesn't appear that there's a referrer. What gives, internet?

Wow. But Randi isn't the first Yahoo blogger to call out Yahoo's contextual network or be called out for it. See Donna Bogatin tries to be funny. Gets basic facts wrong from Yahoo's infamous blogger, Jeremy Zawodny.

Yahoo's New Quality Based Pricing Looks at Conversion Rates

Yesterday, I reported at Search Engine Land the launch of Quality-Based Pricing. In short, Yahoo will now begin to give advertisers a percentage discount, based on the ad's quality.

What makes up the quality of the ad? Yahoo told me, "publisher conversion rates, traffic source and implementation type." Now this is not live across all keywords yet, but will be in a few months.

When Yahoo told me the criteria, I had to take a second look. Did Yahoo say "publisher conversion rates?" Yes, they did. So I asked Yahoo for more information.

Yahoo is looking at how a publisher may convert for advertisers and adjust the pricing of the ad based on that. I asked Yahoo to clarify:

Rather than the overall number of leads sent to advertisers (conversion rates), the publisher conversion rate is the number of leads that the publisher send to advertisers that actually result in a conversion (e.g., a sale, a sign-up, etc. - whatever the advertiser has defined as a conversion event).

So it is not based simply on click through rate. So I asked what happens when an advertiser doesn't set a conversion metric? Well, since it is based on the "aggregate performance across the Yahoo network," even if one advertiser doesn't set a conversion metric, others probably will and they can use those data points in determining the pricing of the bids.

What do the forums think? Here are some quotes:

Publisher's perspective:

So much for YPN paying out so much better than Adsense.. All of that is over..

As an advertiser this is good news.
I think YPN first needs more the advertisers than the publishers. That's why they are doing this, to keep the comfort level of advertisers. They can run ads in their search engine too
This is just like Smart Pricing in AdSense, if you have low quality traffic (converts badly), you will get paid less.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Adds PayPal Payment Option

Last night, the Yahoo Publisher Network has announced that they are now offering payment to publishers via PayPal.

I logged into my account to see how the set up works. You simple go to your account settings, click on payment options and there is a fourth checkbox now, this one is for PayPal.

yahoo-ypn-paypal.gif

PayPal even set up a special URL to show YPNers the benefits of PayPal at https://www.paypal.com/ypnwhypaypal. If you have billing questions, you can find more information at the FAQs.

The ain advantage is you will get your money sooner, if you are a publisher who earns less than $100 per month.

If you use direct deposit, the minimum available balance required to receive payments is $100. With PayPal, it's only $50. You can also earn a return on the deposits in your PayPal account by using PayPal's Money Market Reserve Fund. Please visit the PayPal Web site to learn more about this service.

This is an apparent extension of Yahoo's PayPal partnership on the Search Marketing side. This is also a much requested feature by publishers on both the Yahoo and Google side.

How Can Yahoo! Publisher Network Terminate My Account?

For what reasons can Yahoo! terminate your Yahoo! Publisher Network (YPN) account?

The answer is for any reason they want.

According to the terms and conditions Yahoo (aka Overture) has the right to terminate your account for any reason they deem necessary.

We may suspend or terminate our provision of Matched Ads to you at any time, with or without notice, for any reason or no reason, with or without regard for how well Your Site or Your RSS Feed is performing, the quality of user traffic coming from Your Site or Your RSS Feed, or any other factor, in Overture's sole discretion.

Side note: I am curious why the legal document is still from Overture, aren't they going to legally change everything over to Yahoo! eventually? :)

But you as a publisher can also terminate for any reason you want.

You may terminate any of Your Sites' or Your RSS Feeds' participation in the Beta Program at any time by removing the Ad Code from that web site or RSS feed. Upon your termination, we may but do not have to immediately stop providing Matched Ads to Your Site or Your RSS Feed. If you place the Ad Code back on Your Site or Your RSS Feed, you will be subject to the then-current Terms and Policies.

Can you be terminated for not running the ads on your site? That is the question a DigitalPoint Forums asks. Technically, yes - but highly doubtful.

As one member points out, you can also technically be terminated if "you sneeze and cover your mouth with your left hand."

Keep in mind, Yahoo! terminates accounts if they deem necessary. They typically do this if they feel the publisher is exploiting their advertisers in some sense. Yahoo has done a lot to keep their publishers aware of potential violations through their revolutionary compliance manager section.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Earnings & Relevancy Forcing Publishers to Revisit Google AdSense?

It has been a while since I have compared Yahoo! Publisher Network with Google AdSense. I have seen threads over the past month or so, with complaints on the Yahoo Publisher Network.

A recent WebmasterWorld thread sums up all those complaints into one nice little package.

The issues publishers are noticing with the Yahoo! Publisher Network include:

  • Ad targeting is extremely poor and getting worse
  • Earnings are about two to for times less than with Google
  • Click through rates on the ads are five to ten times less than on Google

Most of the responses to these numbers are in agreement. Most have agreed that Yahoo's ad are not as targeted, drive less of a click through rate and earn them less money.

I have not personally tested any of this but I am curious, so I am placing an ad below and I would love to see how relevant it is. Of course, I am not going to look at the earnings on this ad - so don't click it.

YPN Not Going International Yet Says Yahoo!

Again, I am tired of all the fake rumors and speculation that Yahoo!'s contextual product, Yahoo! Publisher Network, is going international. It is not. Do not believe the blogs and forum threads that say so. It is not happening and won't happen until you see a post over at the YPN Blog, this blog or at JenSense.

It doesn't stop the fake rumors from different blogs and then posted at DigitalPoint Forums from popping up every other day.

Yahoo issued a statement for me:

YPN continues to be an invite-only beta program for US publishers. We have been focused on measuring publisher quality and learning more about the types of sites that perform well in our network. Though we are in the process of finalizing requirements and prioritizing markets for global launch plan, we do not have any immediate plans for international roll out

Yahoo! Publisher Network Sends Out More Surveys

Yahoo! has sent out a survey, offering $25 for those who complete the 10 minute survey on the Yahoo! Publisher Network. I received the survey and I completed it last night. Most of the questions were straight forward. But as Nintendo at DigitalPoint Forums notes:

One part was a BIG pain! Where it asks how much you make per 1,000 impressions in the networks, it doesn't tell you to keep the $ out of them, yet it has it in the examples, and the error message doesn't tell you to take them out!

I agree, I did not want to spend the time figuring this out, so I made up those numbers. They should of had an easy to use JavaScript calculator or ask the question in an easier method. But honestly, I am not sure if Google AdSense publishers are allowed to share all their statistics...

In any event, this is not the first time Yahoo! sent out YPN surveys. We report it back on July 24, 2006 and February 24, 2006.

DigitalPoint Forums reports that Yahoo! Publisher Network reports are not reporting 100% accurately. The bottom line figures seem to be correct, but when you break out the reports by channel or domain, the numbers don't seem to add up.

The first post was on March 13th and said:

seems like it stoped tracking my channels/domains correctly if you see the TOTALS for the day its ok, but when u separate them, there like pennies insides and it suppose to be a way higher number, anyone else has this problem? with wrong channel/domain tracking? but totals are still ok?

A few others have confirmed the issue and one said they received a response from Yahoo saying:

Thank you for participating in the Yahoo! Publisher Network Beta program. We apologize for any inconvenience the problem with your URL performance report may have caused you. We are currently working on a resolution. As soon as we learn of a status or a resolution we will be sure to contact you with an update. We are unable to provide you with performance data on individual URL's until this issue is corrected. Once corrected, we will only be able to provide you with this data going forward via the portal.

I assume it is not a huge issue, since the thread is not incredibly active but it does appear to be an issue.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Adds New Poll

The Yahoo! Publisher Network randomly adds polls to the YPN console for publishers. Recently, I think about a week ago, Yahoo! replaced the last poll with a new one that asks. "When developing a new web site at a new domain, how do you decide the site topic (please check one)?"

The options given are:

  • I base it on an extension of an existing web site I already have
  • I want a new web site based on my personal interests
  • I want a new web site based on what’s getting blog/PR coverage
  • I want a new web site that I think is a ground-breaking idea
  • I want a new web site that I think will drive revenue
  • Other (please specify)

Honestly, I would not have noticed the new poll if it wasn't for a someone pointing it out.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Partnerships

One common thread you see come up a lot in Yahoo! Publisher Network forum threads, especially at DigitalPoint Forums, as partnership threads. Partnership threads are threads started by "publishers" who cannot get a Yahoo! Publisher Network account for one of many reasons and asks to partner with one who has an account.

Why can't these publisher's get accounts? Can be because the publisher is based outside the US, and Yahoo! currently does not allow any country outside the US participate in this program yet. It can be because their site was rejected. It can be because they had an account and it was suspended due to violation of the terms of service.

It worries me when reading these threads. Here is an example of a recent looking for partner thread.

I have a lot of sites and i am looking for a partner and want to get into Publisher Network

My sites get a lot of traffic from United States and Europe .
99% of content is in english .

I am ready to split my own revenue 60-40 with you .

If you are interested please PM me or post your reply here .

Typically the share may be 50/50 or in this case 60/40.

There is a thread at DigitalPoint Forums telling publishers to beware of such partnerships. The reasoning used in the thread, in my opinion, is off. My main reason why one should be worried is that it is your account on the line. If they get your account suspended, then you are left with nothing, while all they need to do is start another "looking for partner" thread.

Yahoo! Did Not Announce YPN Is Going International

Almost every day, there is a post in the YPN DigitalPoint Forum asking when is YPN (Yahoo! Publisher Network) going international.

Some speculate that the fact that Yahoo! is taking Panama international, that it means, YPN is also going international by next quarter.

This is not the case. As far as I know, Yahoo! has never come out and said, YPN will be offered in Canada, UK, or any other country, outside of the United States, ever.

We are still waiting for an official statement from Yahoo! on the international roll out dates for YPN. I suspect, the Panama roll out will happen first, and then when that is settled, Yahoo! will work on the YPN roll out.

Yahoo! Compliance Manager Warnings Just An Accident

Last week I reported that More Yahoo! Publisher's Noticing Compliance Manager Warnings. Well, that was a mistake, Yahoo! did not mean to send out all those warnings to all those publishers.

YahooSarah said in the updated DigitalPoint Forums thread:

We were experiencing some problems with the compliance manager status page but we resolved it yesterday. For anyone who got an email regarding YPN's compliance policy, you should log-in to the portal to double check and make sure you do not have any outstanding actions.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
Thanks
YahooSarah

So log back into Publisher Network and check to make sure you don't have that compliance manager warning.

More Yahoo! Publisher's Noticing Compliance Manager Warnings

A DigitalPoint Forums thread has more discussion on recent compliance manager warnings to Yahoo! Publisher Network users.

Yahoo! added the, almost revolutionary, compliance manager November 20, 2006. We then saw it in action with screen captures on December 22, 2006. There were some compliance manager bugs that were fixed quickly.

Did you notice a compliance manager warnings? If so, Yahoo! should be showing you what the issue is and give you enough data to take the necessary action to fix the issue. If not, then you can be banned from the network.

Forum discussion at DigitalPoint Forums.

Update: These notifications were false and mistakes. Many have received emails from Yahoo! apologizing:

Normally, the Compliance Manager page in your Yahoo! Publisher Network account will only appear if there's been a violation of our Terms and Conditions. However, we are currently addressing a system-wide issue causing this page to appear in accounts that haven't violated our guidelines. We regret that we're unclear as to when this will be resolved but advise you to disregard the notice if there?s nothing indicated on your Compliance Manager page itself. We apologize for any inconvenience caused to you.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any further assistance.

Yahoo! Introduces YahooPete As YSM Rep; YahooSarah Now YPN Rep

Yahoo! has added a dedicated representative in the search forums to respond to Yahoo! Search Marketing questions. The new representative was introduced by YahooSarah in both DigitalPoint Forums and WebmasterWorld.

YahooSarah, who has been managing both Yahoo! Search Marketing threads and Yahoo! Publisher Network threads has enlisted YahooPete to focus pretty much on the Yahoo! Search Marketing side of things. Now, YahooSarah will be able to focus most of her efforts to the Yahoo! Publisher Network side of things.

YahooSarah said:

All, I’ve got some good news to share and wanted to start a thread here. Since we’ve rolled out our new advertising system, my goal was to be even more engaged in message board discussions to help you with questions or concerns. I think this community embraced that goal, because I’ve been pretty busy keeping up with posts and private emails- thanks ;-)

To help grow our involvement on the boards even more, I’ve recruited a colleague of mine to serve as a new rep for the boards, YahooPete. He will have more time to dedicate to issues specifically about Yahoo! Search Marketing, while I start to focus more on threads about the Yahoo! Publisher Network (doing both took quite a bit of time, and this is only a part of what I do for Yahoo!). I’m still around though, so you may see me chime in from time to time.

We really do appreciate all the feedback you have given us over the past few months and we look forward to continuing the dialogue. Welcome YahooPete- good luck!

YahooSarah

YahooPete said his introductory hello; saying,

Thanks so much for the kindness. I am looking forward to partcipating in the discussion threads. All my best, YahooPete

Welcome YahooPete, oh and trust me, I will be watching you very closely.

Learn By Example Can Be Dangerous: Google AdSense Example

There is a concept that when teaching children you need to be careful in the way you act in front of the kid. Kids learn by example more than they learn by what they are told. This also applies to adults - really does.

A WebmasterWorld thread notes that a person spotted a a Yahoo! Publisher Network terms of service violation on a "big site." He said, hey, if this site is doing it, does that means it is OK?

No, it is not OK.

The specific violation is that Yahoo! doesn't allow you to run other contextual ad programs on the same page as a Yahoo! contextual ad. Google recently removed that clause from their TOS but added a different restriction. So Yahoo! can and would boot you, if they caught you violating this program policy.

So if you see stuff on other sites, be it contextual related, PPC related or SEO related - do not assume it is allowed just because they did it. Heck, BMW spammed they got kicked out of the index. If you would have copied them, you would have been kicked out too, if caught. Now, you are now BMW, and unlike you, they got back in within days, because they are big - but you are not. So be careful.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Now Limits Three Ads Per Page

The YPN Blog posted that they have updated their program policies to limit the number of ads you can use on a page by page basis. Before, there was no specific limit on the number of Yahoo! Publisher Network ads you can place on a page. Friday, that changes to a limit of three ads per page.

The Ad page may contain a maximum of three ad units.

I am not sure how many real sites had more than three YPN blocks on their pages anyway. So this should not be a huge change for the majority of publishers.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Showing Less Duplicate Ads But More Irrelevant Ads?

Yesterday we reported that Yahoo! Publisher Network Seems To Be Showing Completely Unique Ads. then, Yahoo! posted at the YPN blog Dupe-less-ity explaining that "you and your users should see fewer duplicate ads starting today." So they confirmed it officially.

But since then, publishers have been reporting more and more irrelevant, uncontextually targeted, Yahoo! ads being displayed on their site. Is it an inventory thing? I am not sure.

Here are some of the reports:

but now I'm getting horrible, totally unrelated ads. Not happy, at the moment.
Ditto. No more duplicates, but also no relevancy.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Seems To Be Showing Completely Unique Ads

One of the biggest complaints over Yahoo!'s contextual network, the Yahoo! Publisher Network, was that when you used multiple ad blocks on a page, it would sometimes show the same ad from ad unit 1 in ad unit 2. Reports via DigitalPoint Forums have been noticing that this has been happening less and less as the days go on.

Ads no longer repeat ad nauseam across your ad blocks on a given page. Before, depending on how many ad blocks you had on a given page, the same ad that showed up in the #1 ad queue position would show up in all the #1 ad queue position of all your ad blocks on that page. Not anymore. I'm no longer seeing repeated ads across the ad blocks.

After that post, it appeared that things went downhill again, but then recent posts have shown to confirm this.

I'm noticing more and more geotargeted ads, and no repeating ads too.
No repeats, CTRs are up by 75%. I'm happy.
3 bocks of 5 ads each and they are showing 15 different ads.

Which is very good improvement.

No official word from Yahoo! yet on this, I will track the thread.

Update: A Yahoo representative has confirmed to me via email that improvements have been made to YPN ads and to keep an eye out on the YPN blog for details.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Advice to Yahoo!

Since I just wrote Open Advice to Yahoo! Regarding New Search Marketing Tool, Panama, I figure I highlight a WebmasterWorld thread that offers Yahoo! advice on their publisher network product. Here are some of the ideas from the thread:

  • Ad Link Units (like Google Adsense offers)
  • YPN for search and sitesearch (like Google Adsense offers)
  • YPN referral links for advertisers to sign up with Overture (Like Google Adsense offers)
  • Open the ad market to other countries. You can start with the other English-speaking countries, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, etc.
  • Better targeting
  • Option to delete old channels
  • Option to enable/disable RON ads
  • Quick and easy tool for management of multiple accounts ala adwords editor
  • Better contextual targeting.
  • Unique ads in every ad unit.
  • The ability of advertisers to select which sites they'd like to advertise ("Advetise on this Site").
  • Image banner ads!
  • and more...

Yahoo! Publisher Network Polls

The Yahoo! Publisher Network is the system which allows bloggers and other web content providers to host ads from Yahoo! Search marketing's contextual advertising product. YPN has been ramping up its exposure greatly over the past few months, thanks to a solid PR effort. They had an excellent private party for publishers at Pubcon in Las Vegas, and followed up with an equally well received party for all attendees at SES Chicago. YPN regularly polls it users for feedback on important topics. Additionally, they have been posting quite regularly to their blog, including introducing a new series of posts which promise to give a summary of the results of their polls.

A thread at Digital Point forums discusses the latest poll offered to its publishers, and the biggest choice seems to be "Traffic" so far. Some seem to feel that many of the other choices lead to additional traffic, such as "Increased focus on good content." Since YPN presents this poll via login to the system, we have chosen not to present all the choices, and will let Yahoo! do that on their schedule.

If you are a member of YPN and have voted or have your thoughts on the best answers, please visit the Digital Point thread and share your answer and any reasons behind it.

Mysterious Yahoo Publisher Network Compliance Issues Continue To Puzzle Webmasters

YPN users have been experiencing some strange compliance issues with their accounts the last few days. Barry reported on the Compliance Manager in YPN last year and some of the compliance issues that start back then. The issues were fixed, but just like a Rocky movie they are back again for another fight to confuse webmasters with compliance issues. Yahoo has stepped up the level of transparency with publishers and many are happy about this situation. But what is going on with these compliance alerts Yahoo?

A thread on Digitalpoint Forums tracks these new compliance issues. One of the members says that the YPN representatives know the issue exists and are working on fixing them. One member even goes to compliment the work of the YPN staff saying "Everything is well and under control. Gosh, I love YPN staff..." Good to hear every now and then. Despite the warm and fuzzes, the issues are still going on. One of biggest fears is that users will get kicked out of the program for not being in compliance for no reason whatsoever. However none of this has happened yet and I doubt highly it will occur.

For those with issues, please contact your YPN representative and keep up with updates on the Digitalpoint Forums thread.

Publishers Noticing Yahoo!'s New Compliance Manager At Work

On November 20th, Yahoo! announced they will be a bit more transparent by providing something they call Compliance Manager. What does it do? It tells you if there are problem areas on your site, stuff you have done on purpose or by accident that warrants your ads to be taken down. Compliance manager gives publishers a way to take corrective action, something not done before in the contextual ad game.

A DigitalPoint Forums thread notes that people are now seeing it work. People with problem areas are being notified via the compliance manager of problems on their pages or sites. Some said that it was presented to them, but was a bug and was soon fixed. Some said that it was helpful in correcting the issue. So what does it look like? Well, there is one screen capture at the thread but Yahoo sent me samples in the past.

The portal homepage will show you this message, if you have compliance issues:

compliancemanager-alerts.png
View Full Image

You can then click on a link in the message to see the compliance manager report that looks like this:

compliance-reports.png

I think this is great, the transparency supersedes all other programs to date.

Yahoo! Pulls Tax Information Update Function From YPN Portal Temporarily

A WebmasterWorld thread asks why can't we update our tax information at the Yahoo! Publisher Network portal?

Well, the message on that page currently reads;

To prevent accidental modification, the Tax Information page has been locked from modification. If you need to change your business status from a sole proprietorship to a corporation, please contact Customer Solutions. Please note that a transfer of account ownership is not supported.

Seems to me, Yahoo! is preparing the tax work for their publishers and they wanted to freeze things as is for a bit of time.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Adds "Compliance Manager"

One of the biggest complaints you read about in the Google AdSense and Yahoo! Publisher Network forums in various search forums are from people who have been banned. You see it all the time. A person comes in, says, I hate Google or I hate Yahoo! and rant about how they have been banned for no reason at all. Well, you can blame Google and Yahoo! for not providing sufficient evidence as to why they have been banned. But now you can't blame Yahoo! anymore. They have listened and added a new feature named "compliance manager."

The YPN Blog explains;

Here’s how it works: If a compliance issue is detected on one of your URLs, you will be notified via email and through an alert in your secure account interface. These will direct you to your new Compliance Manager control panel. The Compliance Manager will inform you of what the issue is so that you have the opportunity to fix it. Once you’ve addressed the issue, you can then go back to the Compliance Manager to submit the remedied URL. We’ll get back to you with a status report, usually within seven business days.

I think this rocks and Google should follow Yahoo!'s lead on this. Huge kudos to Yahoo! for adding this feature. We love transparency! The YPN Blog has screen captures, you won't see this report until you have a compliance issue - which will hopefully be never.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Execs Leave

I reported this at SEW but yesterday I learned that no one was fired. Both of them got new jobs elsewhere. Bill Demas and Will Johnson supposedly both got some really good opportunities. So they moved on to take those jobs. Will I think is gone, Bill is leaving at the end of the month or so.

Where does that leave YPN? I am sure they have some bright people who can pick up where these guys left off.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Bans Going Around

A DigitalPoint Forums discussion has several cases of Yahoo! Publisher Network publishers being banned in the past day or so from the contextual program. The thread believes there is now a round of YPN cuts, bans, going around at this time.

YPN is known to be very strict on the publishers they (1) allow in and (2) keep in the program, when compared with other contextual advertising programs.

I'll be specific and make Google look bad.

I often spot people scraping content on this site, sometimes, if I have time, I'll try to do something about it.

The other day I wrote an article named Forum Hack Enables Google AdSense Code To Be Placed On Site. Soon after, I saw via a blog search engine, the same content on this site (nofollow added -[sc]) with my content on it. So I figured I would email my AdSense rep to let him know. His response;

Thank you very much for bringing this to my attention. If you would like to file a formal complaint, I have to ask you to fill out the DMCA paperwork. This is the best way for Google AdSense to resolve conflicts such as these.

Um, you see this person is making a mockery of your contextual ad program, named AdSense. But yet you don't want to remove him? Instead you put it on an other publisher to do the work? YPN, I know, would jump on this are remove it asap, if I reported it.

I told Google because I thought they would want to improve the quality of their contextual program. If I wanted to, I could have filed a DMCA originally and not informed Google right away about it.

-- Earn Revenue
-- Enhance Your Site
-- Drive Traffic to Your Site
(3) Integrated YPN blog entry listings

Day Two at Yahoo! Publisher Network in Burbank

Disclaimer: These are my personal notes. I have not quoted anyone directly, these are just my notes and interpretation of what I got from my time at Yahoo!.

Bill Demas from the Yahoo! Partner Solutions begins introducing today's agenda. Today we will talk mostly about the Yahoo! Publisher Network. The vision of YPN is to enable consumers and businesses of all sizes to realize the full value of publishing. Mission is to be the most trusted and valuable global distribution network for pubs, advertisers, developers and users. A Publishers need is to create content, engage the audience, monetize it and refine through analytics. He goes over the "SMART" framework... He describes that at Yahoo! they have a ton of assets that are not easy to find, so when they design the YPN portal they want to make the other "badges" for lets say finance and Flickr, travel, etc available to you right there. Currently you need to go to each site and get them. They have large publishers, and mid market publishers and also smaller influencer type publishers.

YPN Beta Update
- Goal was to understand how we could create a best of market entry
- They want to build it with Panama in sight, Panama compliant
- YPN some time in 2007
- They want to ensure it is a quality publisher experience for the advertiser
- The beta is out for a while, longer than they may like, but they want to do it right

Key Updates Since Launch
- New messaging feature
- YPN Blog Launch
- Direct deposit
- New publisher services tab
- Improved ad format

The Process:
- They first try to understand who is the target market
- Then they develop concepts and products
- They ask the publisher if those concepts or products are feasible
- Then product spec research
- Then they do UI testing
- Then they repeat the cycle

Market Research:
- Sat down with 17 publishers (remember it?)
- What motivates them are includes their life style (freedom), interests include educate others, some like their hobby, and they just get satisfaction out of building out a successful site and content.
- Challenges publishers face as new publishers versus mature ones.
-- New have problems with set up, revenue and traffic
-- Mature group want methods to optimize revenue sources
- Why join YPN?
-- Revenue opportunities
-- Alternative to Google
-- Peer recommendations (WOM)
-- Diversification
-- Credibility
-- Access to network of advertisers
-- Availability of customer support

Categorizing Long Tail of Publishers
- Segmentation study was a 35 minute online survey of more than 48 questions, of 1049 publisher (remember when they sent it out?)
- Segments include
-- Established Site
-- Long Term Visionary
-- Emerging Entrepreneur
-- Hopeful Hobbist
-- Conventionalist
-- Progmatist
- Classifications of distinctions between the segments were five but I missed those...

Cody Simms, Product Manager is up now to give us a scoop on what is late and greatest with YPN

- Live Demo
- Showed some basic stuff on ad setup
- Showed ad targeting feature...
- Ad blocking
- Custom reporting categories and URLs
- Shows more of the pages, all stuff I covered here in the past
- PayPal support may come on with check and direct deposit

What's Next for YPN?
- As Panama rolls out you will see much improvements on the content match side
- Panama is the foundation for monetization engine
- Last night 100% of the ads now are using the new ad format
- Panama will allow advertisers to manage sponsored search separately from content match
- More relevant ads, etc, with Panama
- Geo targeting capabilities for YPN via Panama

Day One - Today posted at Yahoo! Announced Panama Launch : See My Notes About Panama Directly From Yahoo! Search Marketing's Headqaurters.

Signs of Panama Coming Soon?

A DigitalPoint Forum thread has a member reporting he saw a Yahoo! Publisher Network ad that reads;

Yahoo! Publisher Network Not to Launch in India Soon

Two days ago there were rumors that Yahoo! Publisher Network is Coming To India but I got Yahoo! to comment on it and they are not.

The YPN Self Serve Beta program is not set to launch in India. When we are ready to launch in other markets, we'll be sure to notify you through an official announcement.

Last month, we launched Yahoo! Search Marketing operations in India. As with other markets our Sponsored Search and Content Match listings in that market are placed on Yahoo! India. Additionally, they will be distributed to Yahoo! India's partner sites as agreements are signed.

I found an interesting thread at DigitalPoint Forums that claims that Yahoo! Publisher Network (YPN), the contextual ad program from the Yahoo! Search Marketing guys, is coming to India. Currently, YPN is only open in beta for United States publishers. This post claims that Yahoo! is releasing YPN for India under a different name and is "only available to select publishers."

When is this reportedly coming? In a few weeks, the post says.

Are Women More Likely to Click on Contextual Ads?

A small case study, very small case study, posted at DigitalPoint Forums shows how a person who has Google AdSense on three different sites, has the highest click through rate on his ads on the site that is most tailored to women and girls.

(1) Woman tailored site has 40% CTR with 200 uniques a day.
(2) Cell phone site has 1% CTR with 500-600 uniques a day.
(3) Unknown site has 2% CTR with 1200 unique visitors a day.

He concludes that women are more likely to click on contextual ads.

Well, that is a hard conclusion to make. Of course, the target user is a huge factor in one's earnings. But there are a ton of variables on any single page that can encourage and influence a person (male or female) to click or not to click.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Reporting Bug

OvertureRep confirms a recently reported bug in the Yahoo! Publisher Network reporting engine. Complaints came in over at WebmasterWorld stating that publishers are noting very low impressions, compared to other days, in their YPN console.

OvertureRep (YahooSarah) said;

Thanks for reporting your findings here. Today, we found an error in our YPN portal that caused inaccurate reporting of Ad Unit Impressions, CTR, CPM and Average RPC data for some of our publishers.

Number of clicks and Revenue reporting for all publishers is accurate and was not impacted by this error. We have issued a fix for this error and you will see accurate data going forward within the next 24 hrs.

Sorry for the inconvenience and we appreciate your patience.

One of the major complaints about Yahoo!'s contextual ad program, the Yahoo! Publisher Network, was that the ads did not load as quickly as Google's contextual ad program, Google AdSense. Yahoo! has announced that they have made performance and style changes to the ads.

The changes you’re likely to see include the removal of ellipses (…) and truncated words, the inclusion of 40-character titles on certain ad units, and a change in the number of ads displayed on certain ad layouts.

Here is a screen capture of the before and after of the small banner ads, I have on some of the pages on this site.

yahoo-new-pub-ads.gif

Notice how they cleaned it up a bit and also dropped out the description part of the ad, for this specific ad block size.

Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld & DigitalPoint Forums.

Update: Search Engine Journal has a list of the changes made for each ad block.

* 234 x 60 and 468 x 60 ad unit size will no longer display a description
* Number of listings will change based on the following:
160 x 600 = 5 listings
180 x 150 = 1 listing
300 x 250 = 3 listings
336 x 280 = 4 listings
728 x 90 = 3 listings

Yahoo! Fixes YPN Balance Reporting Error

Yesterday we reported that Yahoo! Publishers Noticing Balance Reductions Last Night. Basically, for example, it showed me having a balance of let's say, $1,000, and then all of a sudden my balance dropped to $500. The problem has been fixed.

YahooSarah said;

Hey there,

Yesterday, a limited number of publishers were impacted by an error in the reporting of their Account Balance. We have identified the error, and the balance information for these publishers will be updated over the next 24 hours.

We apologize for any inconvenience we caused with these publishers.

Yahoo! Publishers Noticing Balance Reductions Last Night

A DigitalPoint Forums thread accounts for several recent cases of Yahoo! Publisher Network publishers losing a substantial amount of money, that was reported due to them, last night.

Last night my Total Balance was $2700.... now Im at $1700.
My Total Balance just went from $26,000 to around $18,000
I just looked at my account, and it showed it as around $2,000 less than what was in there!

Many are suggesting that Yahoo! has refunded advertisers money, and as a result, took back invalid clicks that appeared to have been earned by some publishers. I'll try to get word from Yahoo! on this to clear things up.

Yahoo! Contextual Ads Working Now Everywhere

We have been tracking how long it would take Yahoo! to fix the accessibility issues at some locations, on loading the Yahoo! Publisher Network ads. We first reported problems on September 8th and then again Yesterday, we said it was still an issue.

Well, not any more. It appears from late posts at WebmasterWorld that at 8:23PM (EST), the ads began working again.

Again, this was first reported on Aug. 31, 2006.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Ads Still Have Accessibility Issues

I reported last Friday that many ISPs can not resolve the DNS information of the Yahoo! Publisher Network ads, making the ads not load, and slowing down page loads. Well, the issue, which was first reported back almost two weeks ago, on August 31st, is still an issue today. Yahoo! knows about the issue, they said they would have it fixed shortly, but it must be something serious, because it is not resolved.

Some publishers are actually liking what they are seeing. Why?

You know what's funny, my earnings have been up 200% since this 'dns' issue. I reccon it has something to do with ad inventory...

Interesting... Anyway, I doubt it is directly related.

Some Yahoo! Publisher Ads Are Inaccessible

A thread at WebmasterWorld reports that many people cannot see or display the Yahoo! Publisher Network ads on their site. The reports came as early as August 31st saying that there ads are down.

Upon further investigation, it looks like yahoo is blocking our DNS name server from querying the ypn-js.overture.com IP address on their DNS server. If I use a different name server the ads show up.

OvertureRep (needs a name change) confirmed this in message 3075193 saying;

I wanted to let you know that we have confirmed that certain ISPs have been intermittently unable to access the domain that serves Yahoo! ads on your site. We are currently working with the affected ISPs to fix this problem. Feel free to contact customer support if you are experiencing this issue.

We expect to resolve the issue shortly and appreciate your patience.

YahooSarah

Hope they fix it soon. Also, Brett, can you change her name to YahooSarah? :)

Creating Complimentary Google AdSense & Contextual Ads

A WebmasterWorld thread asks if I have a page on strawberries, how do I get ads for "cream"? People tend to like eating strawberries with cream and the same deal with any product/service that is complimentary to an other.

The best advice I see in the thread is given in detail by ronburk.

He basically says that you should create a new landing page for the cream ad, target cream type of keywords, and link to that landing page via the strawberry page. Why does this work? He lists several reasons:

a) the user who is interested has to perform an extra click
b) you quite likely get payed a better CPC due to the prequalification that extra click represents and the effect it has on SmartPricing
c) you get an entire page (instead of little or no text on your strawberries page) to provide useful info that matches qualified visitors with the product(s) being advertiserd there
d) you get another chance to keep visitors on-site who were thinking about cream, but weren't really going to click on any ad for cream
e) you get more detailed stats about how many customers are interested in cream, but not really enough to click on and ad
f) you get 100% control over the "ad" that appears on page X (no Google T&C applies here!) without ever having to worry about MFAs or PSAs appearing there and, well, if you didn't get it by now, it ain't ever gonna happen :-).

Yahoo! Publisher Cashing in on Surveys

Seems like some Yahoo! Publisher Network publishers aren't satisfied with their YPN checks, they need to take the survey YPN is offering for pay. Or maybe they are just money hungry. :) Yahoo! is paying publishers between $15 and $50 to complete an online survey, more details here. Some said it is the easiest money they ever made. The survey says it will take about 30 minutes to complete, so you got to see if it worth your time.

Yahoo! Warns Publishers: Remove Images Near Ads

We reported earlier this month that Yahoo! has taken a stronger stance against images near your ads. Whereas Google allows it (also see here & here), Yahoo! wants to set themselves apart from Google and not allow it. The thing is, most Yahoo! Publisher Network folks are accustomed to Google's rules, so Yahoo! has to educate.

A DigitalPoint Forums thread shows that Yahoo! is sending out emails to publishers who are using the image near ads method to increase their click-through rates. The emails read like this;

You are in violation of our obscuring guideline. A user must be able to tell the difference between the Ad Unit and other content on your page. The Ad Unit should be separated from other page content, including images, by a border, a clear difference in color, or some other means. Images may not be used to draw attention to the Ad Unit or as a click incentive. I hope this information helps you to understand the requirements more clearly. Please let us know if you have further questions.

But many are written directly in relation to the site and give specific examples to help each publisher.

Yahoo! Publisher Network to Hold Focus Group in California

A DigitalPoint Forums thread shows that Yahoo! has reached out to some publishers in several cities in California. Yahoo! is inviting YPNers to join a focus group, and is paying them $200 for their time (which is a fair amount for a focus group). Some publishers remarked, "I would have done it [the focus group] for free, seriously."

Others received calls about a focus group taking place in mid-August in Los Angeles. JenSense also covers this.

Image Ads & Yahoo! Publisher Network Revisited

The other day we reported that YPN allows relevant images near the ads, and we even showed you a script to auto generate relevant images to be placed next to these ads. The thing is, it now appears that Yahoo! may be more strict about image placement next to the ads, when compared to Google AdSense.

YahooSarah posted and official reply in the thread we originally covered. She said, and I quote;

All,

After reading the discussion on this thread, I wanted to clear up the issues around images and Yahoo ads.

Bottom line: Images next to ads are not allowed in YPN unless there is a clear distinction between the images and ads.

Specifically from our guidelines:
• The user must be able to tell the difference between the Ad Unit and other content on the publisher's page.
• The Ad Unit cannot be obscured in any way
• The Ad Unit must be clearly labeled as "Ads by Yahoo!" and this label should not be confused with other advertising or links on the publisher's page.
• Images or other media cannot be associated with the Ad Unit.
• The Ad Page must not actively encourage users to click on Ad Units.

Hope this clears up the confusion. Feel free to send me an email if you have questions. Thanks
YahooSarah

From this response, I would not be as carefree, as one would be, when placing images near your YPN ads. It appears Yahoo! Publisher Network is more strict than Google AdSense on this method of increasing ad visibility and clicks.

Images next to ads are not allowed in YPN unless there is a clear distinction between the images and ads.

Automated "Relevant" Images Solution for AdSense & YPN Ads

The other day we reported that Yahoo! Publisher Network Allows Contextual Relevant Images Near Ads Only. We discussed the importance of placing images near the ads on your site. They increase visibility and increase the click-through rate of the ads. Last night I was talking with Jeremy, ShoeMoney, on NetIncome and he said he wrote a script to automate the process of finding relevant images to place near the contextual ads.

Today I found a thread discussing this at DigitalPoint Forums. Basically, ShoeMoney's advertising banner maker searches image databases based on a keyword phrase and gives you options for images you want to display. You check off the images and then the tool automatically downsizes the images to appear next to your ad units. Try it out, works kinda well.

What is Your Average Revenue Per Click With YPN?

Yahoo Publisher Network, Google AdSense, and a slew of competitors are all clamoring for Internet space to host their advertisements. Although this is causing some problems with the overall quality of content found for many competitive topics - due to sites specifically created to host these ads - we won't go there this time. The bottom line is that the portal pays the website owner every time someone clicks on an add within their designated box. These boxes are usually pretty obvious, marked with "Ads by Google" or "Ads by Yahoo." So how much can you make off this sort of Internet marketing?

A nice poll at Digital Point Forums asks YPN publishers what their average revenue per click (RPC) is. The choices range from less than 25 cents to above 2 dollars, with most respondents so far somewhere in between. In fact, in the small sample so far, 31% say they make an average of between 25 and 50 cents per click. That's not bad. Hopefully we'll get a much larger sample in there over the next few weeks and see where we as publishers stack up to the averages.

One thing to keep in mind when reading a thread/poll like this is that it is very specific. In this case, the only question is how much you make per click. Determining your actual profit takes many more calculations. Simple numbers (like your overhead including how much you pay to host the site, for example) mix with more complex numbers involved with arbitrage and other marketing techniques used to drive the traffic to the clicks. In either case, it is nice to try to get a good idea of what you could make. Of course it would be nicer if the poll was public and people told us what they made per industry, but chances are you can figure that out based on how much you are paying per click in one industry versus another.

Join the thread and add your average RPC at Digital Point Forums. I also dug up an old post from SER that actually ranks top page at Google for a related search. I wonder if this RPC theory still holds true?

Yahoo! Publisher Network Allows Contextual Relevant Images Near Ads Only

We have discussed in the past how placing images near the contextual ads in the Google AdSense program works well in increasing ones clicks on the ads. Which in turn increase ones revenue. Those past articles are named Images Vertically Aligned to AdSense Ads, Using Images To Increase Your Adsense and Image Ads Above AdSense Ads Increase CTR. But what is Yahoo! Publisher Networks' policy on the use of images near the contextual ads to increase visibility and CTR?

A DigitalPoint Forum thread has a response from Yahoo! on the question of placing images near the YPN ads.

A review of your URL NOT LIVE PAGE shows that the only possible issue with that page concerns the images placed next to the Yahoo! Publisher Network ads. These images must be contextually related to the content on the page as a whole. For more information about our policies, please visit the Terms and Conditions link, found at the bottom of most pages within your Publisher Network account.

And I quote again, "these images must be contextually related to the content on the page as a whole."

So you cannot place random images on the site, which make sense. The images most be related to the content and then you can place them near the contextual ads.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Payouts Evening Out With Google AdSense?

A DigitalPoint Forum thread discusses how Yahoo! Network Publishers are noticing that the earnings with Yahoo!'s answer to Google AdSense is becoming more on par with Google. In our non-scientific AdSense Compared to YPN the advantage went to YPN. Yahoo! earned way more money then did Google at the time. As one would have assumed, that gap seems to be closing.

One DP member said;

I used to make double or triple per click compared with adsense, now it's closer to even.

An other reported;

For me YPN was 10x RPC compared to AdSense a few months ago. Now it is only 5x. Still kicking AdSense butt, for now anyway.

Will PPC Costs Rise With Gas Prices?

A DigitalPoint Forum thread asks if the prices of search ads rise with the price of gas prices. Some reason that Google AdSense (or YPN) publisher's costs are going up, so the ad prices must go up. Others reason that Google AdWords (or YSM) advertiser's costs are going up, so they have less disposal income to spend on ads, because it is all going to gas, so the ad prices will go down.

But as more new advertisers get into the PPC advertising game, costs tend to go up. It is the nature of the auction based pricing mechasinim.

Displaying Google AdSense to Google Searchers & YPN Ads to Yahoo! Searchers

WebmasterWorld Admin, trillianjedi, posted a thread in the supporters forum (paid subscription required) named Referrer based delivery for contextual advertising. That is right, he has a theory that Yahoo! searchers are more likely to click on a contextual ad that says "Ads by Yahoo!" as compared to clicking on an ad that says "Ads by Goooooogle." Same applies to a Google searcher, where a Google searcher may be more likely to click on an ad that says "Ads by Goooooogle" as compared to clicking on an ad that says "Ads by Yahoo!"

That being said, and if this theory is right, would you cloak the ads based on referrer? You currently have to deploy some sort of cloaking for ads when on the Yahoo! Publisher Network. Specifically, blocking international users from viewing YPN ads, so you won't get your site banned for quality reasons.

I suspect the results of the theory may be posted in the WebmasterWorld Supporters forum at a later date.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Takes Hard Stand to Protect YSM Advertisers

There is this active thread at DigitalPoint Forums named Yahoo Publisher Network Terminates More Publisher Accounts that discuss the recent termination of those who run Yahoo! Publisher Network on MySpace accounts. JenSense has a ton of details on this but that really sums it up. Yesterday, Willam Johnson, the face behind the Yahoo! Publisher Network team posted at the YPN Blog an entry named Maintaining a Quality Network addressing the DP thread.

As noted on certain message boards, some publisher accounts have been recently closed. These account closures were based solely on traffic quality issues

He explains that this program is still invite and beta only and Yahoo! is still working on balancing the publishers and advertisers. I think Yahoo!'s stand on removing some of the "lower quality traffic sites" is a good move and will help Yahoo!'s program stand apart from Google's AdSense program. With MSN, we have yet to see how they handle the issues of MFA (made for AdSense sites) and similar sites - not that all those sites terminated by Yahoo! were MFAs.

Will concludes that "maintaining the quality of our Network is vital to the success of everyone involved." I cannot agree more. Nice work Yahoo!

Contextual Ad Click-O-Phobia Begins To Affect Google & Yahoo! Publishers

A thread at DigitalPoint Forums had an interesting title, Are you click-o-phobic? I never really thought about this. Publishers are so trained not to click on their own ads, it becomes second nature to look at the ads, but never ever click on them. This constant wrist slapping training has possibly caused some to subconsciously never click on any contextual advertisement from Google or Yahoo and the others. Honestly, if you are a publisher, do you feel a weird sense of gratification or accomplishment after clicking on a contextual ad, on any site? I believe that I have a weird feeling after clicking on one of those ads.

Click-O-Phobia is the proper term for such a condition.

Is Seeing Double A Good Thing With Yahoo Publisher Network Ads?

A WebmasterWorld thread named Seeing Double discusses how those who run Yahoo Publisher Network ads on their Web sites, and place two or more ad blocks on the same page, can run into seeing the same two ads on the same page. So basically, if there is an ad for Turbo Tax in the top skyscraper YPN ad, there can also be on directly under it, in a different banner, but on the same page.

Is that a bad thing? Is that something that is done by Yahoo on purpose or is it because YPN is still in beta? I wonder if CTR increases if a Web visitor glances at the ad at the top of the page, and then scrolls down and sees the same ad again. I wonder if this is a strategy which is aimed at making the publishers and Yahoo more money or if it is just a version one thing...

Yahoo To Help Publishers Prevent Ads To Be Shown To International Visitors

There is no mistake today that Yahoo doesn't want to their publishers to display the YPN ads to those outside of the United States of America. There have been dozens of reports of bans being placed on some publishers for having too much international traffic. For many publishers, setting up technology to display the ads based on geo-location, is a bit complex and overbearing. We have wrote of one solution for Blocking Yahoo Publisher Network Ads from Internation Traffic in the past. How does Yahoo help the publishers with this task?

Well, today, a thread at Search Engine Watch Forums has a post from YahooSarah stating that Yahoo! Search Marketing will begin to help its publishers with this technical task.

Hi-

We’ve received a lot of feedback today about our publisher traffic policies, so I’m writing to offer some guidance. As you know, our publisher terms and conditions prohibit displaying ad listings to users outside of the U.S. This is because the beta is intended for publishers who support primarily a US audience.

That said, we do want to help our publishers with this situation. Therefore, we are going to work with our team in the coming weeks to create some solutions that our publishers can choose to use. I’ll be sure to follow up soon.

I know this post doesn’t offer immediate help, but I’m confident that these efforts will be helpful in the long run. As always, please keep sending me your feedback.

YahooSarah

This is great news for the beta publishers.

YPN Updates Terms And Conditions: Nothing Major For Publishers

Yahoo! Publisher Network publishers received an email last night from YPN stating there has been "several updates" to the terms and conditions posted at https://publisher.yahoo.com/legal/tnc.php. And as JenSense reports these changes most likely do not affect most publishers. I pulled up the Google cache of the old terms and conditions and compared it with the new terms and conditions, as did Jen. We both noticed the same thing; they added two sections;

You agree that you will not distribute from or promote on Your Sites or Your RSS Feeds any software application that is (or may reasonably be construed as) spyware, adware or trackware.
If you are a sole proprietor, you are not an employee of Yahoo! Search Marketing; if you are an entity, you are not owned by an employee(s) of Yahoo! Search Marketing.

Um, well, nothing really drastic here. But the forums are discussing it, so I thought it was worth a brief mention here.

Blocking Yahoo Publisher Network Ads from Internation Traffic

I hear that the Yahoo! Publisher Network does not like its banners to be served up to international users (users outside of the United States). There are even reports of YPN publishers being banned from YPN for having too many international people click or view their ads. A DigitalPoint thread named Block International Traffic has people discussing several solutions to accomplish the task of geo-targeting your YPN ads. In post # 7 you have a well documented plan to implement geo-targeting for your ads.

(1) Download geoIP.dat and geoip.inc and put the files where you would put your php banner script.
(2) Then use this code for your YPN ads;

<?
// This part gets the ip of the visitor and matches it to a country name/code

include("geoip.inc");
$gi = geoip_open("GeoIP.dat",GEOIP_STANDARD);

$visitor_country_code=geoip_country_code_by_addr($gi, $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']);
$visitor_country_name=geoip_country_name_by_addr($gi, $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']);

//This part shows banners/codes that YOU decide for each country

switch ($visitor_country_name) {
case "United States": { ?>

<script language="JavaScript">
<!--
ctxt_ad_partner = "xxxxxxxxxx";
ctxt_ad_section = "";
ctxt_ad_bg = "";
ctxt_ad_width = 250;
ctxt_ad_height = 250;
ctxt_ad_bc = "FFFFFF";
ctxt_ad_cc = "FFFFFF";
ctxt_ad_lc = "FFFFFF";
ctxt_ad_tc = "111111";
ctxt_ad_uc = "111111";
// -->
</script>
<script language="JavaScript" src="http://ypn-js.overture.com/partner/js/ypn.js">
</script>
<? }
}
?>

That should be it. There are also more details on this page post # 25, specifically.

Contextual Ads

As part of the SES Advertising Track, this session covers the considerations for running your PPC ads in a contextual environment. Andrew Goodman moderates and presents. Other speakers include: Brady Byrd of NewGate Internet and Peter Hershberg of Reprise Media.

Andrew Goodman starts out with a description of contextual ads and a poll: How many are running contextual ads and makes up over 20% of spend. Over 30? About 10-20% of the audience raised their hands.

First up is Peter Hershberg of Reprise Media. He starts by explaining what contextual advertising is. Shows contextual ad exmaples from the New York Times.

Benefits of contextual advertising:

Search engines benefit as contextual ads have been a significant revenue generator. Contextual ads allow search engines to monetize 85% of pages on the internet.

Publishers benefit from a new revenue stream, accessing thousands of advertisers they may have not otherwise had access to.

Advertisers benefit from the additional sources of traffic.

Search engines serve as a point of contact to a huge universe of advertising opportunities. Contextual started in 2003 and are dominated by Google. With the "monopoly" over the contextual advertising market, Google made few changes until 2005 when Yahoo launched the Yahoo Publisher Network (YPN). Major revisions in Google's program followed shortly. Was it a cooincidence?

Changes in the Google program include the ability to place separate bids per ad group, being able to track separate ads at the AdGroup level, being able to choose sites to run your ads on and being able to pay a CPM and build your own network.

Contextual advertising still has a ways to go. Gives example of CNN where ads are displayed from Yahoo (YPN) where some are relevant, some are not. Shows another example where all YPN ads are irrrelevant. Explains this will happen as Yahoo develops the number of advertisers in their program.

Competitors in the space include Amazon that is beta-testing a contextual ad network and affiliates. Also MSN ContentAds with a planned beta launch sometime in 2006. It will be interesting to see what MSN rolls out.

There's been progress, but there's a lot more opportunity with contextual advertising. Contextual is an opportunity to expand beyond search. You can now go online with Google and bid on print ads. Google's acquisition of dMark will enable advertisers the opportunity to bid on ads via radio.

Advertisers would do well to understand the market and where it's going for a competitive advantage.

What's next? Distribution through additional media, targeting enabling better results for advertisers and a better user experience for users. Also specialisation, where search marketers today may become the advertising agencies of the future.

Next up is Andrew Goodman who did a short presentation covering the contextual ad landscape. Only a small number of advertisers are tracking contextual well enough to understand how well it's performing for them.

Gives example of a client that was not tracking well and putting a lot of energy into regular PPC ads, but most of their conversions were coming from contextual ads. Shows another example of how Flickr tested using tags to display contextual ads.

Another area place where contextual ads appear are with direct navigation and parked domains. Growth in direct navigation revenue averages at $170 per domain and is a significant market.

Shows example of client case study where contextual ads were a better match for going after long tail keywords.

Yet another case study showed what not to do. Client ran short term campaigns and not ongoing. No tracking and the content ad bids were the same as search. Much too high. Lesson was to separate content bidding from search bidding.

CPM model: Site targeting with Google. Has been more of a challenge than anticipated.

Content targeting is successful in very specific situations, but not all. It's obvious that it takes some testing and consideration to learn the ins and outs of contextual advertising.

Next up is Brad Berg of NewGate Internet who presents on optimization techniques for Google AdSense. They've found that non-retail does better than retail with contextual ads. He explains that a puchase is more of a commitment for the user than filling out a lead form or downloading something.

Overviews how AdSense works.

Be sure to separate content and search campaigns. Basics of campaign creation. Google AdWords offers more tools to make this easier. When you separate campaigns, don't make them duplicates of each other. It's important to focus on themes and bundle the keyword concepts together in to smaller ad groups. The keywords and the ad creative work together to create the theme.

It's imporant to track content campaigns uniquely. Give a unique tracking url for each keyword in the AdGroup. Use a default and unique url for each AdGroup.

With Google AdWords, use "Fast Track" to create tags for all your URLs and it will enable you to learn more about the traffic you get including: search/content clicks, which creative was used and which website generated the click. You would then need to create an application to extract the additional information for use in campaign analysis.

On Google AdWords reporting, AdGroup reports do not report on content clickthroughs by individual keywords. AdSense does send clickthroughs to specific URLs via the destination URL you can assign to a keyword. The URL report does not report sending traffic to specific URLs, but to the campaign default URL.

Use the matching options in AdWords with your contextual campaigns as you would with search. Also consider using unique creative for your content campaigns. Avoid using dynamic keyword inclusion for content creative.

Barry Chu from Yahoo and Emily White from Google answered questions from the audience.

Yahoo Interviewing Individual YPN Publishers?

A DigitalPoint forum thread says Yahoo is coming to my house to interview me. A forum member describes that Yahoo Publisher Network staff, four of them, is coming to his house to interview him. We know YPN has constant surveys, they often call and email publishers, but in person interviews? Now that is getting detailed.

I am not sure if this is a 100% true. I did get an email a week ago about filling out a survey and if you qualify you will be interviewed for about 3 hours and earn $200. But I can't find that email now. So I would assume this person qualified and is part of that study. In that case, I doubt it is YPN people, it is more likely a marketing research firm conducting the interview.

YPN Payouts Returning to Normal

The YPN Low Payouts a Bug we reported yesterday has been getting better. Yesterday, 95% of YPNers were earning much lower payouts, today, 50% reported large improvements. I counted the responses in a new thread at DigitalPoint Forums named After Yahoosarah commented, it is now Tuesday and revenue is still horrible. Of the 14 or so responses specific towards the payout earnings, seven said the payouts were back to normal and the other seven said they were still low. By tomorrow, everyone should notice normal earnings.

YPN Low Payouts a Bug

Looks like the low YPN payouts we reported yesterday was a temporary bug and has been fixed. YahooSarah replied to the DP thread stating;

All,

Just want to clarify a couple of things here. First and foremost, please know that this is absolutely not a result of a change in payout structure. Advertisers did not pay the same amount as usual per click -- the code launch I mentioned earlier today affected advertiser CPCs, so the earnings you've seen are based on what advertisers were actually charged by Yahoo!.

Many of you have already seen improvements today, and should continue to see more improvements over the next 1-2 days. We expect the systems to be fully stabilized and upgraded by Wednesday.

Hope this is helpful - thanks again for your patience.

YahooSarah

The forum folks love the direct communication on Yahoo!'s part. And it is great! If after Wednesday, your earnings to not level out, then I would report back at the DigitalPoint thread.

YPN Earnings Way Down Past 3 Days

Reports from both DigitalPoint Forums and WebmasterWorld show that most Yahoo! Publisher Network publishers are accounting for lower earnings in the past three days. Some of the numbers reported in the threads are shocking. Many are switching for the time being, back to AdSense. Here are some excepts from either of the two threads;

I've made 80% less then what I usually do at this time.
I make anywhere from 800-1400 on a normal day, and I made barely over 100 yesterday...
from $1200 /- a day to $350
ad about a 50% drop, followed by another 50% drop in a two day time span. This is very sad

Revisiting the YPN Honeymoon Thread

Late January we reported on the topic of Is the YPN "Honeymoon" Over? where many YPNers felt the earnings have been dropping drastically at YPN. A few days ago a new thread, revisiting this topic arose at WebmasterWorld named Very surprised by Yahoo noting that the "CPC is amazing."

The thread creator writes;

I switched my Google spots over to Yahoo a few weeks ago, and I'm pleased to say that the ads are performing wonderfully. They are well targeted, interesting, and the earnings per click simply amazes me. I'm not really sure what I'm allowed to share here, and please forgive me for not pouring over rules before I write a quick post, but I've been averaging more than 10 x as much per click than what Google was paying.

All it takes is one courageous person to debate the rest and other hands go up in support. So far the five responses all support the claim of the first message above. It is possible that YPN changed a few things, makes tweaks every now and then, so people at one point so a major reduction. Only time will tell.

Beating Ad Banner Blindness

So you have AdSense or YPN or other ads on your site and you want people to click. A DigitalPoint thread has a thread named Combating banner blindness - share your tips! Here are some tips from the thread;

  • Text type ads seem to have a better CTR.
  • Having images associated with your ads rotate on each load seems to work well.
  • Using CSS wrap the text around the ads seems to work well also.
  • Try to change the ads style every week so the users won't become used to the old ads style and ignore it.
  • My link units are generally a brighter color -- FF0000 (RED) seems to get the most clicks.
  • Usually one well-placed ad works much better than a mass of banners, etc.
  • Rotate 3 blended ad color and the 4th one, use 'highlighted' color trick. Read more on the following link.

Many other tips at the thread, but the bottom line is that you need to test and see what works best on your site.

YPN Bans Threads Begin to Hit Forums

You see the Google AdSense, "I've Been Banned" type of threads at all the major AdSense forums. Just recently I have been seeing an influx of Yahoo! Publisher Network threads on the topic of account termination.

So what does a typical account termination email look like?

We have terminated your Yahoo! Publisher Network beta account [ACCOUNT ID] for breach of the Terms and Conditions and/or Program Policies. Your breach includes but may not be limited to sending traffic from users located outside the United States, in violation of Section 11(l) of the Terms and Conditions. In accord with Section 6(a), we will not include such amounts in your payment. We have refunded amounts generated from the non-US users to our advertisers and will pay any remaining amount owed to you in accord with the Terms and Conditions.

People take this to mean that Yahoo! will ban people if the site gets international traffic. But it seems to me to mean that there was unusual click activity from outside of the US.

Removed YPN RSS Ads

Just a blog administration note. I have removed the YPN RSS ads from this blog. Why? Simply because the FeedBurner RSS ads have been performing very well. And since the YPN ads were not contextually relevant, I might as well show the ad that makes more money. :)

Anyway, the reason for this post is to see if I messed up the RSS feeds by removing the code.

New Features Coming to YPN

Loren at SEJ posted Yahoo Publisher Network Expanding This Spring and listed out all the changes discussed on a phone call with the YPN team. I got the phone call also, I was just under the impression that this was not for the public, but I was wrong. So here is some of what you can expect from YPN in early spring.

1. Improvements in Relevance : The ads that are shown by YPN are based upon what Yahoo calls its ‘matching expert’s. These ‘experts’ will be expanded to include :
* Contextual Engine : Targeting based upon the content of the page
* Ad Targeting : Publishers can “tag” their own site by defining their ad targeting category in the YPN admin
* User Data : Behavioral targeting or profiling (geographic & demographic)
2. Wire Service : Offering publishers payment via direct deposit this Spring
3. Expanding Invitations : Continuing on reviewing and approving thousands of high quality web publishers
4. International Rollout : Global expansion beyond the United States to English and non-English speaking countries
5. Yahoo Search Box : Publishers can add Yahoo Search to their site which will pay publishers a percentage of sponsored search revenue
6. Integration into Yahoo Answers : Yahoo may be offering its registered users the ability to earn revenue or points for contributing to Yahoo Answers and other user generated content offerings.

Maybe YPN is trying to bring back the honeymoon? :)

I also started a thread about this yesterday at DigitalPoint Forums and it seems most YPN publishers are happy with this announcement.

Is the YPN "Honeymoon" Over?

I have been tracking a thread at WebmasterWorld named The YPN honeymoon is over. It discusses how most of the members in that thread are noticing a drop in earnings compared to when they first started. Back when YPN first launched, and even somewhat the case today, the contextual ads were not too contextually relevant and so the ads displayed were higher paying ads. But recently YPN started getting relevant to the page's content and the earnings per click (EPC) has started to drop. Hence, the YPN Honeymoon is Over. :)

Which brings me to a question I asked about a week ago, Should Contextual Ad Networks Use CPC In Ad Placement? I personally feel the answer is no. If I sign up for a contextual advertising program, I want the ads to contextually match my content. I can sign up with other ad programs that are totally off topic to the content, if I wanted to.

So where does that leave the YPN product? I asked the Yahoo! Search Marketing team for a response. Will Johnson, YP & GM of Yahoo! Publisher Network Online, offered this response:

YPN is in beta mode and we continue to make changes to the algorithms to improve relevancy as we strive to balance revenue opportunity. The balance between these two is very much the focus of our efforts. Our goal is to provide industry leading monetization for publishers in our network. As always, we appreciate the feedback from our publishers.

YPN Doubles Earnings of Publishers on 1099?

Reports over at DigitalPoint forums that YPN has 1099-MISC Problems. Where two YPN publishers report that the 1099 form sent by YPN reports exactly double the earnings they had with YPN in 2005. An other publisher reported that there were no errors on his 1099 form.

Anyone else notice this? I would figure many wouldn't take the time to look and just hand it off to their accountants.

YPN Ads Lag Sometimes?

A DigitalPoint forum thread named Anyones Yahoo ads slow to appear? seems to be right. Since I have the ads on this site in rotation, I normally can tell when a YPN ad will show versus a Google ad. How do I know? It depends on how quickly the ad loads. If it loads quick, it normally is the Google AdSense ad. If it lags a bit, then I know it is most likely the YPN ad. Again, YPN is in beta - so I am sure things will ramp up when it comes out of beta. But some people report as much as a five second load time. Enough reason to be cautious and even possibly go back to Google?

Yahoo Adds AdLinks Like Sponsored Results

You know about Google AdSense AdLinks, Gary Price at SEW seems to have spotted cool Yahoo! like AdLinks. These Sponsored Results do not seem to be part of the Yahoo! Publisher Network program, but rather they are hosted on pages, at the Yahoo! domain. At least we haven't seen it anywhere else.

To see this in action, go to the Good Night, And Good Luck movie at Yahoo! movies. Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on one of the "Sponsored Links". It will open up as if it was done in DHTML, whereas AdLinks takes you to a different page.

Gary has screen captures, if you do not see it.

YPN Publishers Rejoice Over "Remember my ID"

It doesn't take much to make Yahoo! Publisher Network publishers happy. YPN added a much wanted (and I bet requested) feature to the YPN Login Page. The feature is labeled "Remember my ID" and if checked, it automatically remembers your login information, so you do not need to type it in over and over again. Don't get me wrong, Webmasters hacked ways to login to YPN in the past.

YPN Ads Get Relevant

An update on the Irrelvant YPN Ads on Our Forum is that we are now seeing more relevant YPN ads in our forums since reporting it here. For some reason, I do not think all the folks complaining about the relevancy issues have seen improvements. But many people believe that the irrelevant ads are due to the fact Yahoo! wants to give its publishers a higher payout then AdSense. So they serve up higher paying ads, even though they are not incredibly contextually relevant to the page copy.

So I am now seeing ads on Web Design, SEO Services, and others. And very few of those high paying ads. Did I just kick myself in the butt? :)

I have updated our thread on this at Search Engine Roundtable Forums.

Irrelvant YPN Ads on Our Forum

I waited and waited a long time before posting anything on this. Google clearly understands that they need to show search related contextual AdSense ads on our forum. However, Yahoo! is showing ads about "Ionic Air Purifier by Oreck".

Ionic Air Purifier by Oreck YPN Ad

I figured I would wait until the forum was a week old before saying anything. Then I waited even longer but it is still showing these ads. It is a good thing I have my ads on rotation with Google AdSense and YPN.

But I do not rotate the ads in the RSS feeds or email subscriptions. So it looks really bad.

Ads By Yahoo! May Blend In to Background

There is a WebmasterWorld thread named Yahoo Ads W/No 'Ads By.'? which asks how can someone remove the "Ads By Yahoo!" part of the Yahoo! Publisher Network ads?

The thread continues to explain that in some cases, it may appear that the "Ads by Yahoo! is missing but in reality, it is just hard to see. Some what like hidden text on a page.

YPN versus AdSense Stretched Ads

There are two threads at WebmasterWorld in Yahoo! Publisher Network forum that discuss the same topic, they are named; YPN Testing Stretched Ads and the other is named Why do I get just one ad on my wide skyscraper.

First, Yahoo! Publisher Network has been doing this as far back as August 19th of this year. We have an entry on it with screen captures named YPN Randomizing Number of Ads.

The members in the threads are complaining about how Google increases the ad font of the ads when they use a less ads in the wide sky scraper banner. But I think that Google only does that for site targeted ads (I may be wrong and I'll ping JenSense to confirm) but I took some screen captures this morning of Google's non site targeted ads on this site and guess what? They look like YPN sized ads. See for yourself...

google-1-ad-white-s.gif
1-ypn-ads-s.jpg

I believe the only time an ad fills the ad box is when its a site targeted ad. I can not bring up an example of an ad on my site at this time. But there are often examples of them on the homepage of the blog.

Relevant Ads Most Likely Won't Show Up on Password Protected Pages

A forum thread in the YPN section of DigitalPoint Forums asks; Does Yahoo Publisher work for password-protected pages?

If the YPN or Google spiders can not fetch the page, then they can not understand what your content is about. I see it all the time. If a page requires password login, like test servers or private forums and so on, and the pages have AdSense or YPN ads on them, you will notice that they most likely do not serve up as that are contextually relevant to the page.

Google normally will serve up PSAs (Public Service Ads) and Yahoo! Publisher Network would most likely serve up RON (Run of Network Ads). It is possible they serve up ads based on the site's theme, but more often then not, I see that not to be the case.

Yahoo Publisher Network Gives YPN Blanket Fleeces

ypn-fleece.jpg
Yahoo! Publisher Network has been sending YPN beta publishers a YPN blanket fleece. It looks like this closed, when you open it, you will see a red fleece. Very nice gift for only being in beta. This is to compete with Google AdSense's Geek Kit which was also extremely nice.

YPN sent me a bit more, since I am one of the folks on their "Advisory Council" (whatever that means). They sent me a yahoo sports bag filled with all sorts of goodies, including; a very warm holiday card from the YPN team, that when you open the card it yodels at you (Yahoooooo!), which made me jump a bit, but is very funny. In addition, they had a ypn usb drive (128MB), a Yahoo thermos, a very nice yahoo lunch cooler and an outstanding Yahoo branded Fossil watch, in a yahoo branded Fossil watch case.

This was completely unnecessary, but very very appreciated.

YPN Falls Back on Username for Checks Payable To

I just wanted to notify the many folks eager to sign up to the Yahoo! Publisher Network that if you do not enter in a company name, you will get paid (currently) to your username. The name you use to login to your YPN account. This information comes by way of a posting at our new forums, in which YahooSarah, an official Yahoo! company representative, came in to provide the following answer;

I'd like to clarify how Yahoo! determines the payee name to include on Yahoo! Publisher Network payments. When you sign up to be a publisher in the Yahoo! Publisher Network, one of the first things you do is fill out an Account Information tab with your name (first and last), company name and web site URL. We make our payment checks out to the name listed under "Company Name." If you do not represent a company or cannot cash a check with that company name on it, please enter your first and last name in that field.

I apologize for the confusion - we will be updating the language on this site tab soon to make this more clear. Rest assured, we do not use your user name on your check.

We value our publisher feedback and really do listen to your suggestions, so please continue to post your thoughts here.

YahooSarah

Update: Yahoo emailed me to clarify that they normally do not use the username in the pay to field. Normally they will follow up with the publisher if it is unclear. They want to clarify, put something in the Company Name field, even if it must be your First and Last Name.

Does YPN's Targeting Work?

DigitalPoint forum members discuss the pros and cons of targeting with YPN. The thread creator rationalizes that since YPN only has a total of 150 categories and subcategories and DMOZ has ~590,000, so there is no way to target perfectly with an almost 585,850 difference in categories. :)

After that thread, let me quote you phrases of responses to that.

On some sites it may serve targeted ads without using targeting, but I found one to two weeks later that had changed and could only be corrected by using targeting. I experienced a huge improvement by using targeting.
I started using the manual targeting option and the relevance is still very poor BUT I seem to be raking in the dough since then.
I don't bother with targetting, 95% of my pages serve relevant ads without it.
Today, I am seeing the YPN Ad Targeting feature working in REAL TIME!!! I change category, I get the new category ads. I change category again, I get the new category ads, RIGHT NOW! Sometimes the ads are way off, but I GET TO SEE THEM! Fantastic! Give it a shot. You can only gain.

Basic premise, like always, test it on your site and see what works best for you.

I did not get paid for C. It says I got paid for the number 1 in 2000 and 2001 and the number 4 in 2003. So I guess that means that I own two numbers.

I find this funny, reports show that YPN support is aware of the issue and working to resolve it.

YPN Adds RSS Ads to Contextual Mix

Been a bit busy, so I was unable to write about this until now. This morning, Yahoo! enabled the RSS ads feature for its YPN beta users. Some of you know that I have been beta testing these RSS ads for a few weeks now in this blog, you can check them out in the feeds or easily at one of my many feeds in bloglines under the content of the entries. Yahoo has a about rss ads page with some more information. In the ad set up section, there is a new sub section named "rss ad layout" where you can choose your publisher platform (currently wordpress or movable type only), add your rss url and more. YPN has a Ads in RSS Setup Guide with pictures and more information.

YPN Offers Keyword Based Ad Triggers?

Shawn at DigitalPoint forums started a thread named ctxt_ad_keywords where he explains a possible method to influence the relevancy of the Yahoo Publisher Ads shown. Shawn says, at "first glance it looks like someone can pass a ctxt_ad_keywords variable to the script to maybe get ads based on keywords." He explained that he tried it and it returned an error, which leads him to believe it must be turned on, on a per account basis (much like how Google AdSense does it).

Yahoo! Publisher Network Does Not Serve Spanish Contextual Ads Yet

Last month we met the Yahoo! Publisher Network team at the SEW Forums Live conference (thanks for the reception party guys!). There we had a nice talk about adding some of our Spanish websites, more specifically one that has about 50 million pageviews per month. So we thought YPN would love this, right? Well, yes... they would love to, that is, but they can't. We just got word from them and they said, "... we are not able to serve Spanish contextual ads at this time... I don’t have an ETA on supporting Spanish yet." My guess is that it's probably the same case with other languages, but I can't confirm that.

So there you have it amigos, no contextual ads in Spanish from YPN at this time. Too bad, Google Adsense is paying a lot of money!

Don't Buy YPN Invites

Small piece of advice, do not buy Yahoo Publisher Network invites. A member at WebmasterWorld bought an invite and then was denied, since he wanted to sign up under a different URL. Afterwards, he was accepted into the program but now has two different accounts.

Good thing the Yahoo! folks are laid back, it seems like the consolidation of the accounts will go through and everything will be fine for this user.

But it is not recommended to buy invites. I guess they are selling them somewhere on eBay.

Got YPN Check - Just Got Back

Two quick updates.

(1) I got my YPN Check while I was away, and I promised to let you know, so I am.

(2) I just got back into the office, I need several hours to catch up. So I hope to post today, but we will see.

First YPN Checks Received Saturday

Friday we reported that the first YPN checks were sent. A thread at WebmasterWorld created yesterday was named Received first YPN payment today!

The YPN payment was postmarked October 13 from ZIP code 95054. I live in the SF Bay Area (California)

I guess since I am in New York, I should receive the payment tomorrow or the day after. I will report back Thursday, since I am out until then.

YPN Run of Network (RON) Ads

Ben reported yesterday that Rotating YPN and Adsense can be a bad idea. Since then, we have learned that the irrelevant ads shown in those cases, are actually done on purpose. YahooSarah replies at the DigitalPoint thread saying;

The ads he mentioned are not PSAs but are “Run of network” ads, which we call RON ads. RON ads are more generic, category based ads (typically financial services) and publishers do get paid for RON ads. We serve RON ads when a publisher first signs up until we have had a chance to crawl or when the crawler finds sensitive content.

Run of network ads, nice terms.

First YPN Checks Sent

As JenSense reports while I was away, Yahoo Publisher Network checks being sent this week. I noticed my account balance has depleted, but the checks screen shows nothing in that window - hence, still in beta. However, many others at WebmasterWorld forums noticed the total balance screen dropping as well for them. It is good to be in company. This probably is directly related to the payments being sent.

I will let you know when/if I receive the check.

Rotating YPN and Adsense Bad Idea?

On this blog, you might know that YPN and Google Adsense ads are rotated at random between visits/pageviews. Barry has been actively testing what works better YPN/Adsense for the past couple months. His conclusions where that YPN clicks do slightly better then Adsense and earning are higher on YPN.

I came across a blog post and thread on Digitalpoint about how someone is saying rotating YPN and Adsense actually is doing harm to your campaigns because the YPN bot is having trouble matching ads with the content of the site. People are getting what Yahoo calls Public Service Announcements (PSA) ads such as Vonage.com, Lendingtree.com, and so on.

Tim Light from Timlight.com mentions in his blog that"

So the next logical question was why am I getting PSAs on YPN? After having a few of the YPN engineers look at my site they figured out the reason it was getting PSAs was because I was rotating pageviews between YPN ads and AdSense ads. Basically the YPN bot that crawls pages to determine the content was getting confused because the page content was constantly changing and the YPN ads were there one second and gone the next. So each time a YPN ad was displayed it triggered a new “content review” and PSAs would be displayed.

I didn’t buy this answer at first, however [YPN] suggested that rather than rotating AdSense and YPN ads by pageview that I rotate them by day or at least every few hours.

Long story short, rotating every couple hours, days or so on worked better and eliminated PSA ads.

Many Switching to YPN Exclusively

It looks like according to a DigitalPoint thread that asks Would you switch to YPN 100%? that many will switch to YPN now. Why? Bottom line, Google is paying out a lot less then Yahoo! on a CPC basis. I wonder how this will change as the network grows and the advertisers adjust the campaigns to factor in YPN advertisers.

AdSense Compared to YPN: Advantage YPN

Recently I was able to delivery both YPN & AdSense ads here on 50/50 rotation. In the past I used word of mouth to report on Google AdSense Versus Yahoo! Publisher Network performance. I did promised you to share some results, on a generic level, of the two programs compared side by side. So here we go...

Date Range: 09/09/2005 - 09/19/2005

Network YPN AdSense Advantage
Impressions Bit More Bit Less Slightly YPN
Clicks Bit More Bit Less Slightly YPN
CTR Equal Equal None
CPM Much Higher Much Lower YPN 81% Higher
Earnings Much Higher Much Lower YPN 82% Higher

So the reports seem to match much of what I reported here. Except for the fact that YPN had less click throughs. Let me tell you the ads matched 100% (excluding one saying Ads by Yahoo! and the other saying Ads by Google). I think its ok if I report these numbers in such a generic fashion.

YPN Ad Targeting Missing the Mark

Jenstar started a new thread yesterday at Search Engine Watch Forums named YPN's new ad targeting with categories. In that thread, Jennifer asks "Has anyone used this yet, and what are your initial results?"

Well I have, and as you can see (if Google ad loads, refresh) even though I set my ad category to "Computer Security" I have been getting the same "Answering Service" advertisement time and time again. Don't get me wrong, it is using "Ad Targeting" if it wasn't, I would be getting SEM ads. But are "Answering Service" at all related to a "Computer Security" category?

I am not the only one who feels YPN's Ad Targeting is way off. In the thread a member writes, "Yes, I've used it and so far it's terribly off." But to be far, it is less then one week old, and we are invite only beta testers. So they deserve some time to iron out the issues with it.

Yahoo! Publisher Network Offering RSS Ads?

The Queen of Contextual Ads has spotted the First sighting of Yahoo Publisher Network RSS ads. On May 17, 2005 Google Began Offering AdSense for RSS Feeds, I was approved for the beta literally three and a half hours later, they looked like this but didn't always work too well.

My main concern is how Google and Yahoo! will fight with each other over a recent rss ads patent application filed by Google. I am crossing my fingers, but I hope to be able to test out YPN RSS ads on this site soon!

I posted a thread at the contextual forum, DigitalPoint Forums.

Ad Targeting by Yahoo! Publisher Network

JenSense was the first I have seen to jump on the news that YPN added ad category targeting. What does Yahoo! Publisher Network Ad Targeting do? Simple, it allows you to define on a page, directory or site level the category of ads you want displayed. For example, on this individual archive page, if you see a YPN ad on the left side (might see Google AdSense, so you can refresh to get YPN), it should be about Computer Security, because I selected the Ad Category: Computing and the Ad Subcategory: Computer Security. I then associated this specific page with the ad target category. So even though this page is really about contextual ad networks and YPN, it should show computer security ads.

JenSense has more details and screen shots here but here is a screen shot of the "Manage Ad Categories" section with a page added.

Dynamically Delivering AdSense & YPN Ads on Rotation

Yesterday I wrote an entry named Google AdSense Versus Yahoo! Publisher Network but I was not able to provide my own data in the comparison. But today, I am happy to announce that we are dynamically delivering AdSense and YPN ads. Most of you know that it is against the terms of service to have YPN & AdSense showing on the same page. The only legal way to test both AdSense & YPN against each other is to have them show randomly but not overlap each other. Through several forum posts, I heard this can be easily done using PHPAdsNew, which I currently use on this site anyway. So that means you can now take advantage of the site targeting option by Google AdSense to get your ads on this site.

How to Guide on Setting up PHPAdsNew to deliver YPN & AdSense Ads dynamically:
You do not need to follow these exact steps, but this is how I personally set it up.

(1) Download, Install & Configure PHPAdsNew.
(2) Login to the Admin Panel
(3) Click on "Inventory" section
(4) Ad a new advertiser (I named it "Contextual Ads")
(5) Under that new advertiser, "Add new campaign" (I set up two, one for homepage and one for the inner pages)
(6) Create a new "Linked Zone" for this campaign
-- a Zone type "Banner, Button or Rectangle"
-- b Size (match your size that you set up for your AdSense and YPN ads)
-- c Linked Banners should associated to the Contextual Campaign you set up earlier
(7) Go Back to the Campaign You Were Working on
(8) Click on "Banner overview" and "Add new banner"
-- a Select "HTML banner" from "Banner properties"
-- b Copy and Paste AdSense or YPN Code into the box
-- c Uncheck "Alter HTML to enable tracking of AdClicks"
-- d In the "Size" enter in the size of the ads
-- e In the "Description" describe if its AdSense or YPN ads
-- f Then make sure the proper "Linked zones" is checked off
(9) Go back to Banner overview and repeat step 8 for the other ad (if you set up Google AdSense first, then you will need to add the YPN banner Ad)
(10) Go back to the "Linked zones" for that campaign
(11) Click on the linked zone you set up
(12) Ensure the "Linked banners" in that zone are checked off
(13) Set the "Probability" to 50/50 or whatever you want for each banner
(14) Click on "Invocationcode" and Choose from the drop down, "Remote invocation for Javascript"
(15) Copy and paste that code into your Web pages, in place of the current contextual ads.

There you go. I'll share the results I can, when I have enough data for you.

Google AdSense Versus Yahoo! Publisher Network

I have been wanting to bug my guys here to make it so that the YPN ads interchange with AdSense ads. But they are busy and I don't want to bug them with my little games. So instead, I found a thread with someone who actually did it himself. Message number nine, in this WebmasterWorld thread says;

I run Adsense and YPN on the homepage of my main site interchangeably to test which is better (equal pageviews at the end of the day, same weights). Both ad networks are both on target, although Adsense ads show more "less sophisticated" adverts (no brand name, mostly mom and pop operations); while YPN shows brand names. Google's Adsense gives me double digit CTR, while YPN only gives me 1/10 of Adsense's CTR. At the end of the day, even if YPN gives me higher earnings per click, Google gives me better revenues. It seems that G's targeting is designed to show what ads fit the page AND what ads are most likely to get click (probably due to some historical data of my target audience or whatnot). On the other hand, YPN only shows what ads can possibly be targeted to the content, but not really designed to generate high click thrus.

And to be honest, that was my thinking from day one. The CPC seems high on YPN but the CTR seems lower, due to the relevancy issues with YPN. I find the post I quoted above, to be very helpful and I hope to find more.

Where's the YPN Ads? Contextual Stop Words

Some of you noticed that as soon as Ben posted the Held Hostage By Yahoo! Search Marketing During Update! entry, the YPN ads at the top of the index page were pulled. YPN called me last night to tell me the word "hostage" in the title triggered the ads to be removed, automatically. Ok, I said that is a neat feature, JenSense told me it is called a "stop word." YPN told me they would fix the issue on the YPN side but if I wanted the ads to show, I can change the title. I told them, I would wait. Its 2pm (est) here and I am still waiting, but I bet they will get it done by the end of the day.

However, what I find interesting is that the YPN ads on the left hand side of the archived version are showing. Why does the stop word apply to the index page and not the archive page? Possibly positioning of the YPN code within the content, but still.

YPN Randomizing Number of Ads

I was a little surprised to see Yahoo! following the lead of Google, so fast, when it comes to randomizing the number of ads shown in a contextual ad.

The ads at the top of this page randomizing between showing 1, 2, 3, 4, and sometimes zero ads. Maybe they are just testing it but I have screen captures of those flavors to show you. So you know, as I write this, it is still happening.

Advertisers Begin to Switch from AdSense to YPN

In a WebmasterWorld thread named How is the Revenue with YPN compared to Adsense? members who have the privilege of being accepted into the YPN beta testing period are discussing how the revenue compares. What is interesting is that people are now reporting lower CPC earnings with Google AdSense since the Google AdWords pricing change went live. Which makes sense to me.

In addition, WebmasterWorld reports that iVillage to replace AdSense with YPN, which is a bold move. JenSense says, "It is a high profile move, and it will be interesting to watch and see if any of the other higher profile sites follow suit and make a switch from Google to Yahoo or vice versa."

In addition, Jason Calacanis of Weblogs, Inc., who brings in a ton of money with Google AdSense through its network of blogs, writes Why publishers should (yes *should*) support the launch of Yahoos Publisher Network, via Jeremy Z.

All in all, YPN is paying well for me, but I can not get into the specifics. The relevancy as I report here and here are not so great but the clicks on the ads, when clicked, tend to make up the difference for not serving up as contextually relevant ads. I know that the relevancy will improve as they continue to work it during this beta period.

Update on YPN Services: Phone Support

I received an automated email about some feature enhancements to the Yahoo! Publisher Network and it contained a phone number. So I gave them a call to report an issue with an ad not displaying on this archive page. They answered the phone, took the time to review the site, the code and the page it was on. They reviewed everything and determined it was not on my side (I knew that already). They said they will look into it and it looks like they did, since it works. I have posted an manual ad below to see if there are issues with this one as well. But phone support! AdSense would never. It is YPN's goal to keep the phone support, they want to be competitive by providing a high level of human interaction with this new product. Great work Yahoo!

YPN Launch Forum Buzz

As promised in the Exclusive Interview with the General Manager of YPN, here is the forum buzz about the launch of the YPN product. It is still early, just launching officially last night, but I'll try to update this entry throughout the day. Official Y! Search Blog entry, SEW Blog entry, JenSense, the contextual queen, with her excellent write up and official press release.

Forum Coverage:
  • WebmasterWorld: The official discussion doesn't get started in this thread until msg # 34 on page number two, where a member links to a NY Times article that says "Yahoo will invite 2,000 sites to take part in the test, beginning today, and will open the system to blogs and other publishers by the end of the year."
  • Search Engine Watch Forums: Where Danny Sullivan says, "we'll likely have a new forum area soon for YPN."
  • DigitalPoint Forums: Where the discussion also begins on page two, members there seem to be excited to test it out.
  • Cre8asite Forums: Bill starts a thread on the topic, commenting on the interview posted here.

Yahoo Publisher Network: Exclusive Interview with GM of YPN

All the rumors about YPN launching on Wednesday are true. As you can see from the Yahoo contextual ad at the top right of this page, I was one of the beta testers. You can sign up for Yahoo Publisher Network and when approved, you will be able to sign into the YPN Portal (I believe they are not accepting everyone at this time for beta purposes). I am not going to talk features with you (you will get that from the press release), instead, I have an exclusive interview with Will Johnson, YP & GM of Yahoo! Publisher Network Online. Tomorrow I will cover the forum buzz.

Q&A with Will Johnson, YP & GM of Yahoo! Publisher Network Online
(1) Question: If you had to pick one characteristic of your program that stands out from the rest (specifically Google's AdSense), what would that be?
(1) Answer: Can I pick four? :-) In the short term we are differentiating ourselves from the competition by providing additional controls for publishers, providing superior customer service, and focusing on the development of a high quality network. Longer term we will differentiate ourselves by providing access to, and integrating with other great Yahoo! content and services (think: web search, RSS ads, shopping, travel, and some day maybe music and video) to provide publishers with a means of generating additional revenue and engaging their users.

(2) Question: When I first put the ads up on this site, I noticed the PSA (public service announcement) ads. Which advertisers qualifies for those ads? Are they free?
(2) Answer: Yes, these ads are free to these advertisers (typically non-profits). Non-profits are approved based on standards set by the Yahoo! marketing team.

(3) Question: As an experiment, I would love to run a Google AdSense ad and Yahoo! Contextual ad side by side, on this site. Is that against your terms of service? If not, or if yes, would you be up for the challenge? Basically, measuring CTR, income and so on would be nice. But I am also very interested in measuring ad relevancy.
(3) Answer: Interesting idea! Our terms of service require page level exclusivity, in addition we will be running lots of tests and different matching options over the next few month that will make any comparison difficult. That said, let's revisit this idea in the near future.

(4) Question: Google AdSense is being targeted by spammers, in order to make a quick buck. You know, the scraper sites... How do you plan on preventing this from happening with Yahoo!'s product?
(4) Answer: Click-through protection has been a top priority for Yahoo! since we pioneered the search marketing space in 1998. We've continually refined our systems and have built up numerous layers of defense against unwanted clicks. In addition to our click protection efforts, we are implementing front-end and back-end processes (both automated and manual) during this beta to ensure we build a quality network of publishers.

(5) Question: How up-to-date are the "Performance Report"?
(5) Answer: During the beta period, we will be providing an estimated daily earnings updates every 1-3 hours and full progress reports on a daily basis. This means that a publisher can see his or her daily earnings as they accrue throughout the day, but must wait a day to get full performance reports. We expect to improve the timeliness of our reporting as we progress through beta.

Thank you Barry.
