Google To Bring Banners To Gmail, Will Users Leave?

adAge reports Google may be bringing large banner display ads to Gmail.

Google properties such as Google Finance, YouTube and others have fairly large display ads already. Gmail, for the most part, has gone contextual ad based, as opposed to simply display ad based.

Not just Gmail, but also Google Maps, Google Books and so on may start seeing display ads. Would it ever come to Google Search. There was speculation Google would do this back in 2005, and they ran image based ads on Google Image Search. AdSense does offer image ads, flash ads and video ads as well. We have seen a form of query based video ads in the search results, but not basic display ads.

A Google Blogoscoped Forums thread has some users thinking of leaving or blocking any ads that appear that may be distracting.

Philipp Lenssen, the site owner said:

I once tried to use Yahoo Mail for a while, but the banner ads – which happened to reload when you clicked around – were one of the things that put me off. If they ever come to Gmail, and they'll be annoying, I might just switch to an ad blocker (I still don't use any).

What would you do?
