Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

  • Google Explains Why It Is So Hard To Source Original Image Owner
Image search has its challenges, but yet, it is a powerful beast on its own. For as long as there has been image search, the issues of the search engine showing the original image, as opposed to those who hotlink to those images, has been a huge issue. Why? Well, Googler, JohnMu, put a lot of time into a response on why this is the case. So I figured I share the reason, directly from
  • Yahoo Search To Mine Twitter Data Even Thought Bing Does Twitter
A Reuters article reports Yahoo is still going to invest in search, at least until the Microsoft deal is done. Specifically, in real-time search by "mining" Twitter data. Let me quote a piece of this article: Yahoo's Prabhakar Raghavan, head of Yahoo Labs, said that the company could potentially "mine" messages from Twitter, the popular microblogging service, to offer Web surfers search results beyond those offered by Microsoft's Bing. "I've always held that the interesting
  • New Google Sitemaps Error: "Duplicate URL" Warning
There is a brand new Google Webmaster Tools error for Sitemaps files. The new error or warning is named "Duplicate URL" and has been springing up for many webmasters recently. The full error reads: This URL is a duplicate of another URL in the sitemap. Please remove it and resubmit. The first reports of such an error being received by webmasters was on June 29th, Wednesday. The error basically tells the webmaster that they have

Shawn Hogan, DigitalPoint's founder, has posted a thread at DigitalPoint Forums clearly showing his frustration with MSNBot, Microsoft Bing's search crawler. He is upset that the bot is crawling too much, too fast - causing an unnecessary spike in load on his servers. Based on his metrics, he noticed MSNBot/2.0b was crawling at a rate of 8Mbit per second, all day, every day. Microsoft did recently announced that this beta crawler, 2.0b (b is for
  • Google Site Reconsideration Form Not Working For Many
A Google Webmaster Help thread reports that several webmasters trying to use the reconsideration form are experiencing significant difficulties. As the user types in the box, explaining why their site should be reincluded in the Google index, the web page freezes and they get booted out. The issue seems to date back to July 26th, last Wednesday. The issue was confirmed by Googler, Susan Moskwa on 7/28, saying, "thanks for letting us know, folks--we're looking
  • Video Recap of Weekly Search Buzz :: July 31, 2009
In this week's recap, I spend some time discussing the Yahoo and Microsoft deal, specifically the financial side and how that plays a role on how it impacts SEOs and webmasters. I also discuss the Google and Bing search updates, did you notice the updates? Bing has some geo targeting issues that they may need to resolve. Microsoft has a cool search game named Page Hunt. Google is testing search options side bar for image
